A state of the art facility when it was built in 1926, this filling station was part of the 1920's automobile boom that opened the area to its first real influx of new residents and tourists. With masonry vernacular construction, it is an excellent example of Florida's early architecture influenced by the Spanish. Brothers Al and Ben Key purchased the Standard Oil station in 1967, and for decades it served as a gathering place for Kissimmee's men - a place for Monday morning quarterbacking, heated political debates, and friendly ribbing between college rivals. In 1998, the city purchased the station with plans for demolition to make way for a wider road. As the project moved forward the demolition was not necessary. I went to pick up some wish items during their posted hours. When I arrived, the sign on the door said open but tbe door was locked. This isn't unusual as I've been there several times and only once has the door been unlocked. I knocked on the door as I usually do however this time, no one showed up. I waited about 30 minutes in case they had left for lunch and just forgot to turn the sign to closed but even then, there was still no one there.
