The Strand Movie Theater, I recently heard about the changes involving this little movie theater. During the early 80s, I started my college education, when the college was called Kutztown State College and one of the 1st movies that I saw there was a Space Oddesey ..., and the showing was in their 2nd floor theater. I just remember that it was small and my roommate and I, unfortunately had seats close to the front. So after that we just made sure that we got to the theater earlier, instead of the last minute. What i do remember is that it cost a dollar to get in and add the cost for snacks, it was pretty affordable on a college student's budget during the early 80s. Remember seeing Caddyshack there and that gopher just had my roommate and I, along with the rest of the audience laughing.. so in 2014, after my son's and I saw a movie at one of the big theaters in Allentown, and each spent close to 30 bucks for a movie ticket and snacks, so the following night, I talked my son's into driving down to Kutztown and check out what was playing there, so we decided to go see the Spiderman movie, after paying for the ticket, which i believe was around $5, plus snacks, so we each paid less then 15 dollars for a movie ticket and snacks. The place looked the same way it did when I was a student at KSC, the KUP, and now KU! The Strand is a great piece and part of the town's history. I am just wondering how many Kutztown university students have gone to see a movie at the Strand, since the day the theater and the college opened. But I am giving the Strand 5 Stars because the service was always great, the snacks were usually fresh, including the popcorn. The facilities were always maintained in wonderful condition. Plus they usually had good movies playing, which was good when we were college students with limited access to funds and transportation. As a person who received his history degree from KU, maintaining a piece of history in Kutztown is a great idea for the town, its population, along with the...
Read moreSaw the first Sonic movie here in 2020 as the pandemic just hit and had a rip-snortin’ hurrah with my friends. When I arrived just in time to see the sequel today for the 4:20 showing, the door was locked. I confirmed via the website and phone number that there was indeed a showing at 4:20, and yet nobody came to unlock the door or answer the phone. I never find any pleasure in assuming the worst of anyone, but if the person in charge left early when there was still a showing that at least one paying customer would come to see, that is honestly unprofessional, especially for a small-town business that prides itself on affordability.
I stood at the door as the movie was about to begin, and I am standing here over a half hour after the movie has started playing. This is honestly a disappointment and I hope that I have not wasted what could be my last chance at seeing the movie at this theater.
I would love to have given a higher score, but this is completely ridiculous.
EDIT: Moving down to one star. When (who I assumed was) the manager returned after I waited for 50 minutes or so, he claimed to have locked up and left a full five minutes after I had arrived at the door. I know that the time was 4:20 when I checked my phone upon arrival, so if he is the same person who I saw exiting the building and getting into his car by the front entrance as I was approaching from the next block over, then it wasn’t even a mistake—it was dishonesty. I hope that future showings won’t be canceled early so others don’t end up waiting around for...

As a movie loving KU student, hearing we had a movie theater near our school was great news! The tickets being so cheap was a definite plus, and the elderly gentleman running the box office (whom I will assume is the manager) was kind and welcoming. The younger man running the lobby was quiet and uncommunicative, however, and the condition of the theater was overall poor. It needs some serious renovating.. the men's bathroom was missing the handle for the warm water, which meant I could only wash my hands with cold water.. the theater itself smelled funky, almost as if you could tell how old it was. The viewing experience was a good one, until a dog could be heard barking somewhere close to the theater, which was incredibly distracting.. yet, all the flaws being considered, you just can't beat the price. I'd go again ..but considering that it's the only theater that's even remotely close, I don't have many...
