The interesting points of the 87th Street shopping center are the giant sized Jewel Osco, the well stocked and managed Home Depot, Starbucks, etc. , etc., etc. After shopping several stores at different locations for some special pyramid shaped bulbs for the lights in my son's bathroom, had I lots of hair, I would have been ready to pull it out. Hooray for the Home Depot attendant that just happened to be coming down the aisle where I was looking on 87th Street in the windy city. I asked for a little assistance on the bulbs. He looked the burned out bulb over, reached onto the shelf that had at least 100 different type and sized bulbs, pulled out a box of four bulbs, put them in my hands and said, "There you go sir." Since I had tried other supply stores and they didn't seem to know where to start looking for the bulbs, I was fabergasted, dumbfounded! And guess what, I brought them home gave them to my son, and bingo! His world, or at least his bathroom, was brightly lighted again! Too good to last. Shortly after that, he comes out, and you might know he says "Pop a couple of the big, overhead bulbs in my bedroom also need replacing! What is that quote about the weary and rest. That was how I felt at the time. However, as to the shopping center, I was impressed with how well stocked were the Home Depot and the Jewel Osco. At that Jewel Osco I found everything I was looking for, except the chopped black walnuts for sprinling over my...
Read moreThis is an old neighborhood mall. It is probably one of the first strip malls I can recall going to as a child. Sadly, it hasn't changed much since then. This mall needs to have better lighting in the parking lot. If it were not for the security on foot patrol and circling the lot in marked cars and pick up trucks I would be skeptical to be there after dark. Since all of the stores are open after sunset they need to get more lights and in the meantime brighter bulbs in the lights currently there. This is a busy location right off the expressway and by the CTA Redline. Safety should come first. The parking lot also needs paving as badly as 87th Street does after each winter. There are so many potholes you have to dodge them while driving through. There are a couple of open spaces for lease. It's a prime commercial location. I am impressed with the new AT&T and Vitamin Store. Chipotle not so much! This intersection certainly didn't need another place for fried chicken so that will do. I would love to see a Ross, TJ Maxx, Homegoods,Old Navy, or a another larger chain store to go with Burlington, Marshall's, and Ashley Stewart. Any of them woul...
Read moreIt's a fun Jewel to go in. Great selection of produce and a knowledgeable and helpful staff. One of my favorite things is the misspelled sign on the front which has a charming story if you ask about it. I live closer to Local Market which is closer, but Jewel has higher quality items in terms of grains, pasta and sauces, condiments, drinks, ECT. I have also found customers here to be pretty friendly. I always enjoy using my 6'3" arms to reach high shelves for people and chat about food. I learned how to cook greens and cornbread from some lovely people here. I really feel lucky to be near a nice Jewel like this.
The only downside is that during the day there is always a large group of guys (some girls) hanging out at the entrance to the parking lot hustling a bit. It was intimidating when I first started coming here, but they never really bothered me. But I have seen them getting rough with each other. Again, I have never felt threatened, but I also know how to handle myself... I worked in public...
