Parking is very limited in the lot north of the building at busy times and on half price day. You can park on the street or on the side streets. As with most crowded places watch your purse. Just wear a crossbody purse. The aisles for clothes are very narrow which can make you a victim for pickpockets. None of this is the stores fault is just is what it is. This store isn't that big and the clothes, bedding, shoes and accessories take up more than 3/4 of the store. No big furniture here maybe a chair or 2. Some books, records, houseware, Pictures frames, toys, dishes and luggage are in one room about middle of the aisles to the left as you enter the building. There is also a display case to the left as you enter. This place can get trashed by the customers and their unattended kids. It's a hit or miss on the prices. I usually just shop here for Mid Century Modern collectibles and you can find some great deals. Most of the stuff is priced to move. They have colors of the day that are half price and white is usually full price unless it's a half price day. Some days they also have special pricing on specific colors such as get 3 for 1 or spend a specific amount and get a certain amount off your total. Sometimes It can be confusing so read the signs at the front of the store. They don't have any signs in the back room that show what colors are half price. They used to have them up on the wall but now you have ask someone. They are posted only near the front and on the opposite side of the building. Good time to go is around 11 to 2 during the week and 2 hours before they close during the week and weekends. The day before a half day sale is a good time to go as well because customers hide the best stuff around the store to buy for half price later. Happy hunting and also bring your own bags or...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreA few weeks ago there was a cardigan sweater that I passed on for 3 dollars because of multiple moth holes and general bad overall condition. Today I go in and see that it's now on the wall for 50 dollars. When you consider these items are from free donations and the overall clientele of a thrift store; a south side of Chicago thrift store, it's a slap in the face to the customers.
When items you saw on the rack for 3 dollars are now on the display wall for $50 and a thrift store is asking $30 for a used t-shirt, it's time to call it a wrap.
Village Discount Outlets in general are starting to become terrible where they feel like they're boutiques instead of thrift stores. From a business stand point it makes no sense.
If you have a constant supply of a product, does it make more sense to sell 15 t-shirts a day for 2 dollars a piece or 1 t-shirt for 30 dollars that may take a month or more to sell? When items aren't selling they're occupying retail space and when you're not cycling through product quickly your back room starts to become overcrowded.
tl;dr Avoid Village Discount Outlets, aside from extremely high prices on used clothes, they're taking items off the racks and pricing them insanely high. Unfortunately they will probably end up closing down like other South Side thrift stores, limiting affordable options for a community...
