I went to the Merriam Ave store in Leominster, MA on 10/29 to purchase 3 turkey breasts that are on sale. Unfortunately, they were sold out so I asked a person in the meat department if they would be getting any more in. He said maybe they could tell me in the front of the store. I went to the customer serbice desk and asked the person there. They said "Why would he send you up here? I don't know." and got the manager. The manager told me he didn't know and I should come back the next day or check on line. I went to the website on 10/30, ordered and paid for the product. I received a confirmation email. Later, I received a text with a link to check in when I arrived. I checked in when I arrived and waited. After 20 minutes with me being the only person waiting for someone to come out of the store, I called the number on the sign in front of me. The person I was speaking to knew nothing about my order. After a minute, she stated that my order had been cancelled and I should have been notified. I was not notified. Extremely disappointed with their service and process. New website or not, it was a horrible experience. My time is valuable, just like yours. System should not have been launched until fully tested for all contingencies. I doubt very much that I will do business at Hannaford stores going forward. Hopefully you will learn something from my experience and...
Read moreI've heard great things about customer service at Hannaford. Their variety and selection are wonderful... NOT so for my first stop in. I am from out of town and needed a cake for my son's BiRtHdAy. The Hannaford cake was requested by him. Thought it would be a quick and easy errand. I was so disappointed in the selection at the bakery. I was looking at cakes, which was right in front of the bakery counter. Three employees were directly opposite of me behind the counter, stocking. Not one of them asked if I needed assistance or even acknowledged my presence until I spoke. I was only finding chocolate cake with best creme (buttercream) and wanted to know if there was chocolate cake with whipped frosting/icing in the back. I was abruptly told, "No, all we have is out." I immediately picked out a chocolate cake with buttercream and asked if she would write his name on it, and she did. Not a pleasant first experience. My daughter-in-law could not believe that Hannaford's bakery did not offer one up from the back when one wasn't found out front or how poorly the customer service was. Maybe it was just an off day for them. Unfortunately, no one liked the BiRtHdAy cake with the taste of...
Read moreI’ve never felt more disrespected in a grocery store than I did during my recent visit to the Hannaford in Fitchburg, MA. A group of young employees working the checkout were more interested in chatting amongst themselves than doing their jobs. When I attempted to purchase alcohol, they mishandled my valid, out-of-state ID as if they’d never seen anything beyond their zip code. I’m 28 years old and clearly of legal age, yet they made the process unnecessarily difficult and awkward.
What made it worse was the complete lack of basic courtesy. I said “thank you” and “have a good night” multiple times—none of them acknowledged me. Not a word. Not a glance. Just back to their conversation, as if I wasn’t even there.
With grocery prices soaring and another Hannaford just across town, I’d expect management to invest more in training staff on customer service fundamentals—like how to greet guests, provide assistance, and at the very least, respond when spoken to. This experience left a sour taste in my mouth, and I’ll be rethinking where I choose to spend my money...
