🥃 Barrel House Distilling Co. – A Hidden Gem in Lexington’s Distillery District ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Tucked away in the historic barrel house of the old James E. Pepper Distillery, Barrel House Distilling Co. brings a rich heritage back to life. Founded in 2008 by Jeff Wiseman and Pete Wright, this craft distillery is a testament to Kentucky's enduring bourbon legacy.

What Makes It Special? RockCastle Bourbon: A smooth, sweet bourbon handcrafted using local Kentucky corn and wheat, offering notes of toffee, caramel, and vanilla.

Devil John Moonshine: Named after Pete Wright's great-uncle, a notorious 19th-century U.S. Marshal and moonshiner, this spirit pays homage to a colorful family history.

Elkhorn Tavern: Their on-site lounge offers inventive cocktails made from their own spirits, providing a cozy spot to relax before or after your tour.

Tours at Barrel House Distilling Co. are intimate and informative, starting on the hour from Wednesday to Sunday. You'll delve into the distilling process, sample their range of spirits, and learn about Lexington's rich distilling heritage. Thank you too Jeff Wiseman how personally, guide me through the complete process and the tasting. It is unforgettable, Thank you.

Final Thoughts Barrel House Distilling Co. offers a unique blend of history, craftsmanship, and hospitality. Whether you're a bourbon aficionado or new to the spirit, this distillery provides an authentic Kentucky experience that's...

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Barrel House Distillery, and overall, it was a delightful experience. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, making it a great spot to unwind and enjoy some quality spirits. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, eager to share their passion for the craft of distilling.

The tasting portion of the visit was a highlight, showcasing a variety of their offerings that truly reflected the quality and care put into each bottle. I particularly enjoyed the unique flavors and the smoothness of their spirits, which clearly demonstrate the distillery's commitment to excellence.

However, I did find myself wishing that the tour had delved deeper into the history of the distillery, the brand, and its founder. While the information provided was interesting, a more comprehensive overview would have enriched the experience and given visitors a greater appreciation for the legacy and craftsmanship behind the spirits.

In summary, Barrel House Distillery is definitely worth a visit for anyone interested in quality distilling. With a bit more focus on the historical context, it could elevate the experience even further. I look forward to returning and seeing how they continue to...

If you’re in Lexington and love bourbon, Barrel House Distillery is a must-visit. The place has an authentic, laid-back vibe, and the surrounding historic distillery district adds to the experience—cool bars, great food, and a real sense of Kentucky bourbon culture.

The bartender was fantastic—super friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about bourbon. Whether you're a seasoned whiskey drinker or new to the game, they take the time to walk you through everything, offering great recommendations and insight into the distillation process.

And the star of the show? RockCastle Bourbon. Smooth, rich, and full of character, it has a perfect balance of caramel, vanilla, and spice, with a long, warm finish. It's the kind of bourbon that makes you want to sit back and enjoy every sip.

Whether you're looking for a great tasting experience or just a cool spot to hang out, Barrel House Distillery delivers. Highly recommend...

One of the few distilleries we could find still offering tours during the pandemic. Master Distiller Andrew gave us an intimate tour of the distillery, telling us the history and “distilling” the truth behind the medicinal bourbon that kept the James Pepper Distillery alive during Prohibition. The tour was great, but the tasting was even better with a fine selection of spirits from vodka, rum and moonshine to some fine bourbon. Having been primed during the tour and tasting, we had to try the latest barrel select bourbon. It didn’t disappoint. By lunchtime we were a little tipsy and decided to stay for lunch. Wanting the full Kentucky experience, I had burgoo for the first time, which was delicious, but needed more bourbon to pair with it. Of course before we left, we had to buy a couple of bottles of the barrel select. Great first KY distillery experience. Best craft distillery experience I could imagine.

We enjoyed our tour at the Barrel House Distillery. Our tour guide, Marshall, was great. Thank you for entertaining our questions and teaching us more about the process and history. It never hurts to hear it again, in fact helps to piece things together. Third tour and I am still learning something new each time. It was nice to see the Pot distillation verses the column distillation process we had seen. Liked the tasting experience. The gift shop has a nice selection of items. We stopped at the restaurant and had a bite to eat afterwards. Service was good and we liked the food. Booking the tour was easy, distillery easy to get to and parking was easy. Liked the “prescription” for medicinal bourbon.👍 In all, we enjoyed our time and would recommend this as a place to visit.
