Edit! I just talked to another employee I know and apparently the decision to double the price for a 100% markup on the new pokemon set was made just yesterday. So for people like me that preorder a month in advance and have for many sets before this, there are expectations based on experience about the pricing. The manager lied to my face about the policy before today and is solely responsible for the price hike according to my source. He should be fired. None of the regular employees are happy about this, they all know how messed up it is to change the price last second on greed. Hobbytown didn't pay more that normal for this set and the manager chose to charge double because of the hype.
I would give zero stars if I could. This review is specifically about their policy change on the most recent set of pokemon cards.
I have bought new card sets from this hobbytown for a while now because they don't let single individuals go and clear the shelves. On release day, for MSRP for only 10$ more usually. I have bought old sets that aren't current, for only 15$ more at most, sets that are selling online at the time for 110$ or more. I had been told numerous times that they don't inflate prices and sell as close to msrp as they can, they had my respect. New set drops today, I had had it preordered for over a month. Same story, they told me it will be 5 or 10$ more expensive but at least what you preorder will be in stock for you no matter what. Guess what, their policy changed, greed has consumed them with the hype. Even though they've placed the order with their vendor far in advance, they were now selling the new product at "market price" instead. Current market price is insane, 3 times the normal msrp and the set hasn't even released until just today. So I show up to pick up my order like usual, and they are telling me I have to pay 110$ for a item that is normally 50 and double the price for another item... Greed, sheer greed. I asked them about the deviation from normal and there was a new price sheet they had just for this and oh demand is so high and oh we didn't get enough for all our orders and oh texas has snow. Excuses, and greed. The manager overhears me asking why the price is inflated and tries to blame the online scalpers for the price hike. Sure..... They have a retail vendor selling them a product at a certain price so they can sell it near msrp. They order far in advance, I know how vendors work. Nothing had changed other than the decision to make more money today off a hype product. No integrity whatsoever, not for this manager, not with the potential to make double the profits, he's too greedy. You could see it in the normal employees as I asked the questions, they knew it was wrong, they knew why the price had doubled. The manager squirmed as he threw out reasons for the greediness. None of it made a difference since he was just lying to my face, what I was told would cost 75$ total the day I preordered ended up being 160$ today... the manager even had the nerve to tell me if I didn't like it, someone else would buy them instead at the inflated price. That was the only bit of truth that came out of his mouth in five minutes, the part that he was being greedy.
The saddest part is when I know 100% they are flat out lying about always selling items like these boxes I bought today at market price. I literally bought a couple similar boxes recently at a reasonable price, very far under the market value online. These aren't individual trading cards, something normally sold at market value. This is a brand new item they chose to sell at a 100% markup on release day. Disgusting. I've lost so much respect, and I personally...
Read moreThe store in question is deceptive. My 14 year old purchased a drone from his hard earned detassling monies. He was very excited to purchase a drone. 30 minutes of very careful/gentle flight time with the drone it fell apart. My son was extremely dismayed when wanting to return the drone for good reason. He even was open to store credit or a much larger purchase to which the manager I believe indicated that the issue is now retained by the customer. I am completely unimpressed given that the store and its sales associates never provided informed consent that the items would not be accepted for return if they had been opened. If one reads the extremely small print on the bottom of the receipt they will see that returns aren’t granted. My question is why the small print, sales of defective products, and not having your employees trained to provide informed consent. Two thumbs down. I will never give them my business ever again. In this day and age I would think companies would do all that they could to keep...
Read moreEvery time I go to Hobby Town I get excited thinking I will find something unique and fun. Upon arriving I am greeted by an unenthusiastic staff, seemingly just chatting it up, and apparently bothered that I entered their store. As with every visit to Hobby Town, after interacting with one or more of their staff,I am left with the impression that each one of them have inflated their perception of their own intellect far higher than my own. You could say I feel as though they look down their noses at me. Typically I feel of normal, or higher than average intelligence, have excelled at standardized testing and belonged to Mensa. So I am left also feeling that it must be my tattoos, highly stylized hair, or “flashy” clothing that causes the Hobby Town staff to collectively treat me as though I am dragging my knuckles into their gaming haven that I must not belong. I hope you are happier to see me next time guys, because I still love the items in your store despite your conceited staff (although...
