Was there in July in Cabin 12. Could not stand the heat without an AC. Had to keep every window open plus the plug-in fan going nonstop just to survive. Problem was, there were no outlets in the bedrooms so the fan couldn't reach us in the evening when trying to sleep. The bedrooms did not have any cross-ventilation so we were stuffy and sweaty all night long. Also, since we had to keep the windows open, anyone from the road could easily see right into our bedroom at night if we had any light on. Plus, with the windows open all night long, we kept being awoken by cars driving down the road right outside our windows. Additionally, the cabin was falling apart. The floor was tilted and uneven in many places. Seems like maybe there is structural damage that needs to be addressed. The bathroom floor had major water damage near the shower. The linoleum was buckled and tilting toward the river. All of the uneven floors made it hard to walk. Every time you sat on the toilet, the toilet shifted precariously, and is clearly not secure. Since the bedrooms didn’t have any electrical outlets, I could not use my cellphone as an alarm because I couldn't charge it. I also couldn't put the fan in the bedroom for some relief, as noted above. I had to literally go to RiteAid, buy a spray bottle and spray myself down with water all night long until my sheets were damp. Worst sleeping situation I can remember. There were also dogs here that barked. I don't like barking dogs on my vacation because I'm not a dog person, and I don’t enjoy being around strange dogs that might bite me. I didn't realize this was an establishment that accepts dogs. Also, in the kitchen, the counter overhangs the drawer so you have to literally lift the counter up to get to the utensils. There were posted threats that if you don't recycle they will charge you $100. Not exactly a nice thing to see when on vacation. You'd think they could take care of the garbage on their own since we are paying to stay there. Another annoyance: They don't clean your room each day. If you want fresh towels, you have to gather them up in your arms and trek over to the office to exchange them yourself for new towels. In the living room, the TV is too high up on the wall and the couch is right underneath it. To watch TV, you have to sit on the couch and look up very high. It causes a lot of neck strain. The couch was lumpy and lopsided. There was no room to move around in “living room." If anyone is sitting on the couch, you have to step over their legs to get to the kitchen and bathroom. Way too cramped. The shower had low water pressure and you had to wait a long time for hot water to arrive. On the porch, there were loose floorboards near the entrance. We had to check out early because of the lack of AC. We couldn't even sleep it was so bad with the heat. All in all, this place needs a major renovation and remodel. It needs structural reinforcing at the very least. Maybe other cabins are better, but we would not...
Read moreLet me start by saying I wanted to like this place because it is dog friendly, convenient to area attractions and I like to take my dog hiking with me in the White mountains.
I stayed in cabin 6. It had a cute "studio" layout with the following features - Small kitchen with sink (which had food scraps in it when I arrived), two burner stove, microwave and small fridge. There was a small table with two chairs next to a fieldstone fireplace and a queen size bed. There was a tv hanging on the wall in the corner but I never turned it on. The bathroom is very small. The shower stall was filthy with grime and mold so I did not use it. I had to go two days without a shower. The cabin had a small wall mounted heater that did a good job of keeping the cabin warm during low 40 degree nights. However, when I turned the heater on it emanated the smell of an old dirty ashtray. Although smoking is not allowed in the cabins now, these cabins had been smoked in in the past and you can definitely tell. There was also a small, screened back porch that overlooked the river. The ceiling in the porch is very low. I'm 6'2" and I could not stand up straight on the porch. But it was nice to sit on the porch and listen to the river. The bed was a little firm but comfortable but it did have a very strong smell of febreeze or some other deodorizer. It was much too strong for my liking.
The cabins here are VERY old and VERY rustic. The floors and doorways are uneven and the doors do not close properly because the doorways are out of alignment due to settling over the years. I placed some bags with food on the kitchen counter and during the night mice went through the bags and chewed through packaging and ruined most of the food. I just threw the bags out. That was all my food for two days. After cleaning the mouse droppings off the kitchen counter I looked around the cabin and noticed mouse droppings in several other locations - disgusting. When I let the staff know about the mice and the feces they left behind I was told that they would let their exterminator know and "Thanks for understanding". No offer to come clean up the mouse droppings or even to say sorry about my ruined food. The staff member seemed surprised that there were mice in the cabin but I later noticed black plastic rodent traps outside of most of the cabins and I have since read other reviews where guests have had rodent problems. So they definitely know they have a rodent problem. You might think - it's only a few mice, no big deal. But mice are disgusting, disease carrying rodents. Google hantavirus.
TL,DR - Between the mice infestation, filthy shower and dirty kitchen sink, I left very disgusted. I went home and washed everything thoroughly. I will...
Read moreThis place was adorable! It would have been a 4 or 5 star review if not for the weirdest bathroom ever and the booking issues we had. We booked it on Travelocity for 1 nite as we had Ice Castle tickets, and these guys refused to honor the reservation - they said they require a 2-nite minimum even tho that's not how it was listed, so after a big headache, they discounted the second night (which ended up being serendipitous, even tho we originally didn't want to go up there for 2 nites, as we hit the Alpine Adventures zip lines and they were awesome). The employees were super nice and helpful, the cottage was really cute, and the location was great. It had a working fireplace, cable, and mini-fridge/microwave. The furniture was in pretty rough shape and the beds weren't comfy, but that wasn't surprising in a rustic cabin. We stayed at the Bears Den (cabin 1) which has 2 bedrooms, a small bathroom, and a lovely little screen porch that overlooked the river - both bedrooms opened onto it, which I thought was neat. There was only 1 heater in the living room, but as long as we kept the bedroom doors open, that was fine!
The only real issues were with the bathroom. The toilet is placed so close to the wall that the wood molding at the corner touches the bowl where it curves in at the back of the seat, so you can't actually sit on the toilet (you have to lean forward really far, otherwise the corner jabs into your kidneys - I don't know if someone overweight could use the toilet here). The shower sprayed all over the floor no matter where you turned the head. And there was no cold water - both the hot and cold taps came out hot. The only light in the bathroom had a ~3" pull string that touched the mirror, but the mirror wasn't well anchored to the wall, so it would shake and seem like it was going to fall every time you went to turn the light on. They have a soap and shampoo dispenser in the shower, but no conditioner. There is no hair dryer, and the night light was broken (which made things difficult at night, because we had to sleep with the bedroom doors open for heat, so we couldn't turn the bathroom light on before closing the door without waking the kid up - we had to fumble around the shaky mirror in the dark to find the pull chain and hope it didn't fall off). If some maintenance were done in the bathroom, this place would have been awesome! Maybe next time, we'll try for a...
