As a parent, I do not recommend this college. A few years ago, I told my son about this school. I said why don't you go there, it seems to be a nice little college. We went to orientation, and everything was nearby, easy to registered. However, this college is blood thirsty. They only thing they seem to care about is money. My son, travel 45 minutes everyday, just to take classes. When he finish his degree, no one cared. He had to see a counselor to approved his graduation. I went with him, this counselor lost all his professional skills. He did not suggest anything. No one appreciated the fact, that my son could of went to any college in the inner city. They gave no scholarships or financial aid. And Yes, there were three we applied for: like a scholarship for a full time student. However, when the Detroit Promise came through they did not notify us. Cut the money up and sent a check of the remaining balance. I had no ideal the Detroit Promise pay them anything until years later. Since all the scholarships we applied for at Schoolcraft did not come through. No letters, no updates, as if we never applied. When I called and inquired I was told to be patient. "Soon we will be notified." I really felt the lady really didn't know. They put us on a payment plan, in which my son promise to pay every cent of $6,000 program he started. When I asked for a T schedule years later, they informed me "he got a scholarship". However, I don't see it like that. They told me the "Detroit Promise" was the scholarship. However, I don't see it like that. The Detroit Promise is for all residents in Detroit. I applied for a Scholarship at Schoolcraft. Every year, I hear thousands of dollars go unused because students don't apply. And even though this school said they had scholarships, my son did not get any. Nor did he get any pell grant/financial Aid. This school is very hard giving financial aid as well. The other reason, I choose this school because of the soccer team. This is the only school I know that has a junior soccer league. However, the team was already booked up. My son, a who's been playing since he was six, could not even get on the regular team and was not invited to attend any game, even though the coach say he could be on the "starter" team. I paid $150 for uniform, that my son never pick up. I asked my son, to pick it up. But he did not. I was embarrassed by this coach. I dislike that this school took my son for granted. So, I don't recommend this school and I wish they will stop sending emails, it don't mean nothing. Since then we have switch schools, it has been the better...
Read moreAs a first time parent sending a child off to school I feel overwhelmed with the enrollment process. The staff is not very helpful. The first time we went in to meet with someone, no one would sit down with us and we were sent away with a checklist paper as our form of help. I could have printed the checklist out from home! I wouldn’t have taken time off work to go there. The checklist was helpful but not what we needed. There was trouble submitting our FAFSA and it took longer than we wanted to fix it, causing us to register for classes later than we ever planned to. The advising office recording prompts tell you they are open until 5pm and it’s drop-in only and you could “drop in over the phone”. You can’t make an appt. For some reason, they wouldn’t let me call on behalf of my 17 year old son so he called when he got out of work at 3:30 and they refused to help him. They closed in 1.5 hours and it was “too late.” They told him to call back between 8am-9am if he wanted to get help. So why does the recording say you can’t make appts and they are available until 5 for drop-ins? When in actuality you only have a 1 hour window to call each day! I felt like he must have misunderstood so I called them back and the woman snapped at me for calling and pointed at the fact that we were registering late. Then when I explained to her why this was nearly impossible for us, she made the exception that she would let him call as late as 12pm. He started getting nervous so he took an early lunch at work to make the call this morning and then they told him he would have to take time off work and finish registering in person (again conflicting with all other info we’ve seen). So I made another call to ask questions about this and they told me we could register online, but it was clear the woman on the phone was frustrated with me for having questions and taking her time. Nearly makes me want to throw in the towel and start at another school. We are intelligent people. The process shouldn’t be this hard. Maybe don’t work in admissions if you don’t want to help kids and their parents. Don’t expect parents to not be involved when enrolling their 17 year old kid for school! Have to do it that way? Fine. But expect me to have questions when my kid can’t relay every bit of information you told him in your...
Read moreI graduated from Schoolcraft in 2014. I believe that Schoolcraft College is a great place to start your higher education career. The cost for tuition is great, if you plan to transfer to a four year university in state, the majority of your classes transfer over. The tools in Web Advisor really help you with planning for the future after obtaining your associates degree. Students can take classes according to your own cognizance and you’re not obligated to unnecessary courses to fulfill prerequisite needs, especially if you’re well versed in certain subjects. Rate my professor is a great tool to get opinions on the professors in at the institution, but a lot of what you experience in these courses depends on your work ethic individually. For example, Professor Abbas teaches Microbiology and he is deemed a poor teacher, based off the Lab Reports, but if you actually do the Labs and follow instruction correctly the lab reports are easy, the directions are clear and he’s actually pretty helpful if you get past the language barrier. Professor Wrone is also an amazing professor and she makes sure that her students absorb the material. If you are a half ass student then I would suggest taking her classes because you will be required to work for your grade. The fact that the majority of the classes here are offered online is great, it really helps those with full time jobs, children and other responsibilities that prevent fulltime campus attendance. The only thing that I didn’t enjoy about Schoolcraft was the fact that most professor engage in “group work” and many (not all) of the people who attend Schoolcraft are lazy as hell, so if you’re passionate about your work and your grades depend on you picking up the slack for others, this mostly happens in the online psychology classes. The only other pitfall was that most professors do cumulative exams for Mid Terms and finals, it’s like you’re taking a Michigan standardized test. You’ll notice that, this rarely happens in four year colleges. Over all Schoolcraft is great – The food on campus is great too (Perks of a...
