This review is based on the OBGYN services and the poor treatment that I received from Dr. Onibokun and the midwife Leslie Bolander.
I found out that I was pregnant on 01/01/21 and started my OBGYN appointment on 01/29/21. By the time I started my prenatal appointments at the Banner Health center in Maricopa I've already missed 2 weeks of work due to the severity of my symptoms. Missing work is something rare for me and if I miss work then I'm extremely ill. I explained to Dr. O (Onibokun) & Leslie Bolander (midwife) that I was experiencing the following symptoms: Swollen Feet and Hands Lower Back Pain Headaches every day Extreme exhaustion and fatigue to the point that I'm unable to get out of bed all day. Extreme nausea & vomiting (3-5 daily or more) Cramping/Pain in lower abdominal Congestion / Runny nose Rapid Heart Beats/ Heart skipping beats Unable to go to work due to the severity of symptoms Chest pains & difficulty breathing
The symptoms that are listed above are a few of the symptoms that I experienced. By my last appointment I had 17 symptoms that were ignored, and told my symptoms were normal. I was mocked, belittled, concerns ignored, and gaslighted to try to make me feel like my symptoms/concerns were not valid or real. I asked, begged, and pleaded for Dr. O to notate all of my symptoms and I was told repeatedly that my symptoms are normal and that is why they weren't being notated and they won't be notated. I explained to Banner Health Employees the importance of notating all my symptoms. I explained that what may be normal for one person may not be normal for me and my pregnancy. That each pregnancy should be viewed on a case-by-case basis because each woman reacts to pregnancy differently. I stressed that I do not want me or my child to die due childbirth because something that was going has gone undiagnosed.
When Leslie would finally notate some of my symptoms, she would make snarky remarks and make it seem that it was too much trouble to take the additional 2 minutes to notate them. On several occasions she mentioned that I was not sick enough to miss work, that people who have diabetes are still able to go to work, and that I was billed extra because she keeps addressing the same issues & my pregnancy is normal.
I asked both physicians to complete my employer's Short Disability Form and I was told that she was unfamiliar with the form, then Banner Health doesn't complete such forms, and then she doesn't have the authority to complete such forms. Once I finally received the form, I was already terminated & the form stated that I should only miss 1 day a month despite all the symptoms I was experiencing & the severity.
I had to be my own advocate. I had to advocate for myself to have Banner Health employees to notate my symptoms, so they can familiarize themselves with my case/symptoms to make the best educated diagnosis to prevent mortality. I had to advocate and beg Leslie at my 9/7/21 (Tuesday) appointment to order me an ultrasound to ensure that my amniotic fluid was not leaking because I thought my water broke while using the restroom. Also, I noticed that that my son was not as active. At that appointment she also scheduled me to be induced on 9/13/2021 (Monday) since I was pass my due date. At the appointment she finally agreed to order me an ultrasound for 9/9/21(Thursday). An hour after I received my ultrasound on 9/9/21, Leslie Bolander (the midwife) called me and informed me that my amniotic fluid was almost at the critical level & I needed to go to the hospital right away. If I didn't advocate for myself my son would have ran out of amniotic fluid and would have been dead by the time I arrived at the hospital to be induced.
It took 8 months for Banner physicians/employees to refer me to a cardiologist, nutritionist, therapist & neurologist. It turned out that my symptoms were not normal. I was diagnosed with heart conditions at 8 months and diagnosed with severe preeclampsia at the hospital.
Do better Banner Health & listen to your...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI scheduled an appointment a month ago. I was deceived into choosing a doctor that Banner Maricopa told me was accepting new patients at this location. The reality, though, is he is a visiting doctor from Banner in Glendale, that comes into Maricopa only once a week and is not seeing new patients at Maricopa. Each time I received my appointment reminder, it showed my appointment location was in Glendale. Therefore, I called the Banner Maricopa office THREE separate times over the course of the week leading up to my appointment just to triple check the location. Every assistant I spoke to assured me my appointment was going to be in Maricopa and that his calendar was inaccurately showing Glendale. They implied he is new and his location hadn't updated yet. It wasn't until less than 48 hours before my appointment that I got a call from Banner, asking me to move my appointment up from 9:00 AM to 7:30AM. Though I wasn't too keen about this, I consented. Before I got off the phone, I asked the assistant (now the 4th time checking) if my appointment was in Maricopa, and she told me no, it was in Glendale. In fact, she was calling from his office in Glendale. She was the first person to inform me that the doctor only assists in Maricopa once a week (not the day of my appointment), and his appointments are only with established patients. She spoke to her manager but ultimately told me my only choice is to travel 65 miles to Glendale as scheduled, or schedule a whole new appointment with the Maricopa office. I called Maricopa, and their only solution was to schedule a new appointment, as if today was my first time calling to schedule an appointment. So of course the next available appointment is even later than I want to be seen. No effort was made to try to get me closer to the original appointment date. I would not have chosen this doctor in the first place had Banner Maricopa not lied to me about his being a new doctor that is accepting new patients. There were other doctors available at the time I first called. Not one time but THREE times they misled me. It is unacceptable that I have to wait even longer to see the doctor, since I lost a month to waiting for my appointment...
