Review
For the better part of the last two weeks of September, I had the absolute privilege of hanging out at Cade’s Dice and Decanters. I got to have not just a little bit of time, but all day & night outside playing magic, talking cards, trading deck lists, coming up with new ideas, learning, and laughing. I went to Cade’s for a Friday Night Magic event by myself for the first time in my life, which if I’m honest, was somewhat terrifying. I’ve never played alone, or even spent any appreciable amount of time in a game shop on my own before.
My nervousness, I’m delighted to report, was entirely unfounded.
The striking thing about Cade’s is how much you feel like family the moment you step inside. From the first time I stopped in that first Saturday afternoon, right up to the next Saturday morning when I drove back over from Pensacola to trade Pokémon cards with the owners’ daughter (who is beyond perfect) I was so happy. So comfortable just...being. I was so MYSELF. It’s been a very long time since I’ve had that, and finding it at this little family run shop in Milton was the most luminous bright spot I could have ever hoped for—a balm on my soul during what had otherwise been a stressful and heart wrenching trip.
I arrived to the shop with nothing but four commander decks and a little determination, and left with new friends, new cards, new ideas, and a nickname. The guys at the shop now call me “Sharkbait” (OOH-HA-HA) and were the sweetest folks I could have asked for. They taught me about mechanics I’d never seen, cards I’d never heard of, and told me stories about what magic was like from long before I started playing. I learned and grew so much in the week I got to spend with the folks at Cade’s, and by the time I made it back home to St. Louis, I felt like a whole new player—even my normal playgroup commented on how much more confidence I had.
I’ve built 6 commander decks since I got home, and kept in touch with the wonderful people I met here regularly since I left. Other people may visit the sunshine state for the beach, next time I make it to Florida, you can be sure my first priority will be sitting down and shuffling up at Cade’s...
Read moreAfter careful consideration, I am compelled to revise my previous rating to a 1. Several factors contribute to this decision. Firstly, the establishment's content is not suitable for children in their developmental stages. Secondly, the owner demonstrates a lack of loyalty to his customer base. Thirdly, the pricing for used cards is not transparent, requiring customers to scan a QR code and visit an external website to obtain the price. Fourthly, the owner engages in questionable practices by removing established players' statuses to obtain promotional items for personal gain. Additionally, the store's pricing is significantly higher compared to competitors. Regrettably, what was once a reliable establishment where I formed many friendships has implemented new regulations that seem designed to alienate its patrons. On a positive note, the store provides a space for Dungeons and Dragons enthusiasts, offering a $5 table fee for Magic, which includes a game or two. However, it's worth noting that official Magic pre-releases are not conducted at...
Read moreCade's has been my go to place to go out and join people for Magic, pokemon and heck I even learned a few table top games there too. I'm really enjoying the UniVersus game he just started carrying. The culture is great. I feel welcomed into any group I get curious about.
I have tried other card shops around Pensacola and I always feel like a 3rd wheel and never really feel comfortable trying a new game.
At Cades I feel welcomed. I stopped playing Magic years ago but I just learned about Cades Tier 3 and Tier 4 League and now I'm curious about trying MTG once again. Great Shop. I continue to find my self there more and more frequently....
