In short, spare yourselves and avoid Wendy the owner.
I just left hairpolice in minneapolis feeling disrespected, full of regret, and having my mood changed from great to pretty bad.
This is my first time posting a review (and hopefully my last).
I called based on a dreadlock recommendation, made an appointment, and explained 3 times when asked, that I would be willing to pay whatever they're asking, but I didnt need the other services they were offering. Rather, I only hoped that someone would take a look at my locs from a vantage point that isn't easy for me to get, and separate any if necessary. I asked for someone that had experience working with natural neglect dreads. They said, almost everyone is really experienced with dreads and you can work with Wendy the owner, she's available tomorrow. We will put you down for an hour and that will be $65. I said alright, sounds good.
I called back early the next day rescheduling for an hour later since she was open and that worked better for me. After finding the place (not easy to see, gmaps will only get you close) I checked in, then looked at my phone. She sat me down, and i ecplained what i said over the phone - specifically what i was looking for. She wanted to cut, crochet, and tie strings at the base of some of my locs. I was only considering the string until she explained it, but then she began stabbing my loc (part of that technique) with a crochet hook, without warning. I politely asked her to stop, that I don't need that, she continued asking if I was positive, until I asked her to stop a second time. After looking at my locs and cutting two apart -- that I asked her to pull but didn't mind for the results are similar -- she tried to cut another but I could visibly see that one and politely declined. She said two times how boring it was that I didn't want more done. She acted in a way that reminded me of children complaining when they don't get something they want. And eventually I said, thank you, I think you've done everything, I'll pay whatever you ask. She said "this is the worst dread maintenance client ever" to another coworker, in a loud, passive, light toned way, rather than an aggressive one. I thought to myself, really.. what if I had been mean, rude, loud, dishonest, or refusing to pay. She asked for 20, I gave her 30 because I could tell she wasn't pleased with the lack of action. She continued on with how much of a bummer it was that there wasn't enough for her to do. I said "well on the bright side, that's gotta be the shortest amount of time that you ever made that much" She said, "that's true," while still looking down about it all. I told her that her nightmare was over because she wouldn't have to see me again. But when I left I realized that I'm the one that's bummed out after that. At least she made 30 dollars in 8 mins. Yes, looking at my phone upon leaving, the entirety of my stay, from the moment I walked in and checked my phone to the moment I left, 8 mins had passed. Her attitude, her words, her lack of consideration, and her overall customer service brought me down.
I'm trying to figure out how before we even began, and before my hesitancy began, her customer service skills were what they were, considering she is the owner. From what I gather, which is admittedly a stretch after so short a time, she might just be the kind of artist that cares not for anything but what she hopes to achieve.
So I'm not telling you -- person who somehow made it to the bottom of this novel -- to never see anyone else there, for all I know they might be quite the opposite; nice, considerate, and willing to work with you. You could even see Wendy if you genuinely don't care what she does. Sit down, let her have at it, and hope you like the result because I doubt it will matter to her. Whatever you do, don't be gentle, apologetic, and polite, for you'll get walked all over.
What I am telling you is that I had a bad experience and I don't want you to...
Read moreI've seen a few people at hair police for bleaching and for color. It is THE place for things many other salons either don't do or can't do. It's safe to say they have a century or more of experience between them all, so you'll be in good hands!
I just saw Will. He did a wonderful job getting my dark hair bleached and toned perfectly. He had no problem rolling with my constant talking and banter. It's like getting your hair done by a friend you didn't know you had! They are a group of talented artists who make everyone feel accepted. Their free consultations make sure you can get exactly what you want from the stylist best at what your specific needs are.
They are a Minneapolis staple for a reason. You can even check out one of their booths at festivals for on the spot festival hair. I love the people and the atmosphere. Check them out for your next cut, color, extensions, locks, etc. Highly recommend!
Note: I did have one unfortunate experience with a stylist maybe 5 years back who cut my hair a solid 4 to 6 inches shorter than I wanted and it wasn't really my style. I probably should have said something more quickly. He also bleached it to the point of it breaking and thinning. But he no longer works there. He was fairly inexperienced and young, and despite the hair damage, the ice white color I got from black ultra processed hair was perfect and really tricky. He was a friendly guy though and the vibes...
Read moreVERY talented people here, I'm so glad I tried it out. I asked for bottleneck bangs and got exactly what I wanted.
Andrea is the first hairstylist I've ever been to who really listened to my input and focused on the art of hair itself. She has killer precision and I really appreciated that. I could tell that she was super talented right away.
One thing I really loved: In the past, I've been to other salons and the stylist will usually take one glance at my reference photo at the beginning and do the whole haircut without looking back at it again. But Andrea on the other hand was so awesome and was referencing back to the photo through the whole haircut, even zooming in and asking questions about specific parts. I am really protective over my hair, so that made me feel very secure and relaxed knowing that she is detail oriented and clearly cares a lot about her craft. And she did a stellar job too. I could not be happier.
Ps: if you've never been here before, they are located upstairs. There's a heavy-looking door with caution tape wrapped on it that says hair police. :)
Overall I'm definitely coming back and recommending this place to any friends/fam looking for a color...
