I am extremely disappointed with my recent visit to Nags Head Fishing Pier. An older gentleman working at the counter displayed blatant racism towards my friends, who are Filipinas. He invited us in since it was pouring rain outside. When we entered, he aggressively asked, "What do you want?" We were confused by his question, as he had just invited us inside to escape the rain. Then he began to yell in an aggressive tone, "What do you want?" I told him that we wanted to wait until the thunder and lightning had passed since we had parked our car about half a mile away. He told us we better not be mingling around in the aisle. Initially, I thought he was joking, but his body language and tone made me second guess that.
He then walked to the counter, came back around, and started to question us. He asked where I was from (born and raised in NC) and then asked my two friends where they were from. They told him the Philippines. He then began to belittle them in an unacceptable manner, making derogatory comments and treating them with a level of disrespect that left us all in shock.
Some of the things he mentioned included asking what part of the Philippines they were from, then aggressively listing different areas and stating, "You know what we did during WWII. We boom boom boom over there." He continued with ignorant questions such as, "Do you all shoot poison darts over there?" He asked them a question about WWII and what happened in the Philippines. When my friends said they didn’t know, he continued to yell, "What kind of Filipino people are you? And you call yourselves real Filipinos?" He then asked if Filipinos (they) were legal or illegal and why they were in the United States.
This kind of behavior is intolerable and should not be happening anywhere, especially in a place that is supposed to be welcoming to all visitors. We went to Nags Head Fishing Pier hoping for a pleasant and relaxing experience, but instead, we left feeling deeply upset and disrespected.
I have always believed that such beautiful locations should be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of their background or ethnicity. Unfortunately, this incident has marred what could have been a wonderful day. It’s disheartening to see that in this day and age, there are still individuals who harbor and express such discriminatory views.
I had to explain to my two friends, who are NC teachers (and we already know how hard it is in this struggling school system), that what they just experienced was 100% Grade A racism. They are new to this country (legally) and this is what they had to witness.
I hope the management takes this matter seriously and addresses the issue promptly. Looking through reviews on Google (after the fact), it looks like many others had similar negative experiences with this older gentleman. I am not sure if this is a family business or not, but this man needs to be fired or put to work in the back where he is not the first person you see when you walk to the pier.
I urge others to be cautious when visiting this location until there are clear signs that appropriate actions have been taken to prevent such incidents in the future, such as a response from management saying the situation was dealt with. My friends and I will not be returning until we are confident that all visitors are treated with the respect...
Read moreSooooo many memories here! We used to vacation regularly in the 90s, and we spent so much time here back then, being just about a mile from where we stayed on our yearly vacation. It was Psycho, 'Mike' wanting to catch a coby that made the Nags Head pier so memorable. Obviously, things are very different today given time and weather. I stopped by on the 4th, not realizing the pier was closed for the holiday fireworks. I was in total nostalgic shock and really taking it years later when I asked to go out on the pier. The older gentleman at the counter kind of rudely told me the pier was closed. That's understandable, but he didn't have to seem so annoyed by our presence. The hostess for the restaurant was also very persistent in explaining the closure for the holiday. I can imagine how annoying it must be dealing with 'tourists' when working day in and day out, but still have some consideration for your customers. I asked about parking for the fireworks and wasn't offered much advice. Apparently, Bryan, the GM of the pier, overheard me and took the time to offer my family a VIP parking pass, considering my mom's limited ability to walk for the fireworks. It's Bryan's generous consideration that I'm giving the Nags Head Pier a 5-star rating. We were able to park on the premises and enjoy the best fireworks display I've ever seen in my 41 years of life! A day later, I was able to fly over the pier by helicopter. For me, this pier is a staple of memories from years of vacations in Nags Head, and regardless of the customer service, it will always be a special place. Shout out to Pyscho and shout out to Bryan for making our most recent trip most memorable! I will always visit the Nags Head Pier when...
Read moreMy first experience on a Pier 53 years old. I bought the 3 of the day passes. Very happy I bought them $3.00 passes. Honestly at first I'd bought them so I could reach a Pokémon spin! I'd eyed the Pier and spin spot for a few days. I went once(to spin) when I bought the tickets. I bought the tickets around 9am. The attendant gave me the instructions about how the pass worked,as the pass was good until midnight or later. Keep the receipt, show who's on shift, proceed to enjoy the Pier! Pretty reasonable, to spin a Pokémon spot. I DEFINITELY RECOMMEND GOING ON THE PIER PERIOD! IT'S INFORMATIONAL FOR ANYONE TO LEARN ABOUT A PIER,SEA LIFE,and plenty of great memories! Crowded or not, enjoy the walk and always stay respectful of YOURSELF. I must address the 'old guys' working, along with attitudes. I was alone when making my purchase. Like I stated, man told me,"Hold this receipt, show every time you return." He was direct, not rude. Seems like a very busy place at times with a whole lot going on. Buying clothes, fishing, eat& drinks, etc. I recommend reading the reviews, keeping calm, try to read everything around you while...
