I hate to leave negative reviews and especially one on a small business but I feel the need to do so for safety reasons. My friends and I visited Cold Mountain Ski Rentals over the weekend to get fitted for some gear for a trip to VT in a couple of weeks. I called the day before and the woman I spoke to on the phone explained to me that we would just need to come in a few days before our trip and then the day of it would just be grab and go. Great!
When we arrived at the shop, we were greeted by the gentleman working and told him we were here for rentals. He told us to go pick out our skis, which was the first red flag. I asked if he was going to help fit us, and he gave some pretty generic guidelines about ski and board lengths (if you're a beginner, get something at your chin / shoulder, etc.) and nothing more. There were no questions about our skill level, the types of terrain we were going to be on, or any of the questions someone from a reputable ski shop would typically ask a customer. On top of this, their gear selection was pretty lacking. One of my friends is almost 6' tall and her only option was a pair of new skis which would have cost her an extra $35 to rent. The folks working made no effort to check what gear might be returned to the shop before our trip.
Although none of us felt great about any of this, we were willing to bite the bullet and rent because the prices were cheap. However, the last straw was when they told us they wouldn't hold the skis and boots we picked out and there was no guarantee they would be there the day of our trip. Our visit was a complete waste of time.
I'm not sure how this place has 5 stars but please rent from a more reputable place. Saving money isn't worth potentially hurting yourself on the mountain because you weren't given the proper gear...
Read moreGreat place to rent or buy skis for this current ski season and future ones. The prices are unmatched relative to other stores in New York, and the quality of 'used' (undistinguishable from new in my opinion) equipment is great considering the prices. I'll definitely come back to rent for future ski seasons if I find myself still in Queens by next year.
I was able to talk with the proprietor for a bit and it seems they just recently opened their store in the past few months. I find it essential to support our local businesses especially new ones. More importantly there aren't many option for ski gear specifically in Queens. The store itself is sort of small or compact and kind of like a hole in a wall type place. This is a clear characteristic of any New York store. I think the interior reminds me of a lot of Chinatown stores with the set up and overall appearance and display being more of a home-store set up.
Highly recommend to at least check out this place for the current ski season. If you may be interested in entering the hobby, then I found there's a lot of gear for more entry level skiers. I also saw a lot of affordable gear for children. While I don't have any kids, I remember my parents wouldn't help me pursue this as a hobby due to costs. I find it nice that children ski gear can be more affordable nowadays. Children shouldn't be barred from certain enjoyments of life due...
Read moreDecent selection of equipment, clothing & accessories to rent or purchase at very affordable prices, especially compared to other big ski shops. A local small business, convenient location for those in Queens; no need to go far out to Long Island. Owner Jenny is very helpful, friendly and the prices are very fair.
They sell a small selection of used equipment from former seasons for those looking to save a little money over a couple of seasons esp. for kids (this was the nature of my business with them today). New jackets, pants, gloves, layering clothes, all very affordably priced which is so encouraging for those families who just want to enjoy the sport without breaking the bank. $10 used ski pants? yes please.
Location is a little hard to see if just driving by; it is in the basement level. Parking in this area is slightly challenging although not impossible. Once you have your equipment, bring the car and park temporarily in the driveway right in front and load up the...
