I absolutely love the meats and offerings of this lovely, old school shop. Also, I feel good about getting my meats from a butcher, who ethically and consciously sources their goods from locally sourced farms they support. What I don't like about this place is the absolute rudeness of the staff. This is not true for all employees, but some surely could use a little training in what it means to work in the service industry. To further illustrate this: I went there yesterday to pre-order some of their delicious bread, which is undoubtedly the best in the neighborhood. The woman at the register was very cold and said they were not taking pre-orders. Okay, fair enough. We showed up the next day at the exact hour she had said to come. No bread was there. Hence, I asked if I could prepay and they would hold it, so that I could swing by and get it later. The answer was "we don't do that." Okay, I tried again "could you call me when you get your delivery?" No. Then I slipped and said "You really don't make it easy for your customers." The rude woman responded "Well, too bad, it is not easy for us either." So disappointing. It really makes you want to never shop at this place again. My wish is now that some competitors will open one day, where they will gladly welcome their clients, and where I will gladly pay for very expensive, lovely items. Maybe I should also add, that all my neighbors in the neighborhood have told me that they had the same experiences. So, I know I am not the only lucky one to be treated with an...
Read moreAfter too many attempts to find suet for sale anywhere in NY, Marlow and Daughters answered the phone with "Sure," so off I journeyed from Queens. What a delightful shop! Attentive and knowledgeable staff, neatly arranged, and oh, oh, the meat. Pork chops trimmed as they should be, with a hefty fat layer. Cuts like cheeks and tri-tips and a variety of offal. And of course they are happy to cut, trim, grind, tie, etc. to your needs. They have a select assortment of charcuterie (some made in house, like a delicious country style pate) and cheeses and a few breads from She Wolf bakery. Two or three sandwiches were on offering that day and wow, was I happy to see they knew the best thing to go with sweet ham is sweet butter - honey butter to be exact. On a fresh and crispy mini baguette. OMG. And did I mention they are a locally-sourced, grass-fed animals "nose to tail" butcher? (You can probably tell by the availability of offal if you know your meats.) The farms sourced for in-house meat are listed when you shop. I came home with treasures, rendered down my suet and now I have some beautiful pure tallow and the pleasure of having made it. I will...
