I’ve been a proud member of Planet Fitness at 1780 E Gun Hill Rd for over a year now, and I can say—without hesitation—that this location, and the amazing team that keeps it running, is truly in a league of its own.
From my very first visit, Sam stood out immediately. You know when you walk into a place and can just feel that someone takes pride in what they do? That’s Sam. He’s not just doing a job—he’s setting a tone, building a community, and making people feel like they belong. Planet Fitness has always promoted a “Judgement Free Zone®”, with the goal of making fitness feel accessible, welcoming, and encouraging no matter your experience level. But what Sam and this team have done here? They’ve taken that mission and elevated it to something truly special.
Let me walk you through exactly what I mean—with real, specific moments that have stuck with me.
🚪 Flawless First Impressions & Front Desk Hospitality Every single time I come in—no exaggeration—I’m greeted with a smile and usually by name. It’s a little thing, but it really matters. You feel seen. Sam has clearly taken time to build a culture where the front desk team recognizes regulars, makes newcomers feel at ease, and keeps things running smoothly, even during peak hours.
One day, a new member was visibly confused at the check-in kiosk. I watched Sam step out from behind the desk, introduce himself with the calmest energy, and personally walk them through the check-in process and where to find everything. That extra 3 minutes probably changed that person’s entire experience. That’s the kind of attention you can’t fake—and you definitely don’t see at every gym.
🧼 Cleanliness Standards You Can Smell This one is huge for me. A clean gym is a safe gym—and this one is spotless. And I mean consistently spotless. I’ve seen Sam walking the floor with gloves and a spray bottle, checking locker rooms himself, even giving real-time feedback to staff like: “Make sure to get under the Smith machines—that’s where the sweat builds up.”
You’ll never find overflowing trash, empty sanitizing stations, or funky locker rooms here. The showers are always stocked, smell fresh, and look like they’re checked multiple times a day. It’s obvious they follow a strict cleaning protocol—and Sam leads by doing, not just delegating.
💡 Proactive Equipment Maintenance and Feedback Loops Here’s one I didn’t expect. One time, I noticed a squeaky pulley on one of the cable machines. I casually mentioned it to the front desk while grabbing a wipe. Sam overheard, jotted it down on the spot, and two days later? Fixed. Like magic. No “we’ll look into it.” No “submit a ticket.” Just action.
What’s even better is they don’t wait for stuff to break. I’ve seen staff tagging machines for service as part of routine walkthroughs. It’s proactive, not reactive—and that’s what keeps the gym flowing so smoothly. You never feel like you’re waiting on broken equipment to be addressed.
🧠 Fitness Knowledge & Real Support This isn’t the kind of place that pressures you into personal training packages, but that doesn’t mean the team lacks expertise. Far from it.
Once, I asked about alternatives for seated rows because someone was using it. Sam didn’t just suggest something—he taught me. He recommended a superset using TRX rows and resistance bands and even walked me over to show me proper form. I still do that variation to this day.
Another time, I saw an older member struggling to adjust a bench. Sam noticed too, walked over quietly, helped her out without drawing attention, and suggested a safer dumbbell option. It was gentle, respectful, and kind—exactly the kind of moment Planet Fitness wants to be known for.
💜 Atmosphere of Kindness, Inclusivity & Real Community This is the part that keeps me coming back.
You don’t just feel like a member here—you feel like part of something. Whether it’s the staff remembering your name, or checking in on your progress with zero pressure, or just saying “You got this” with a smile—it...
Read moreI've gone to this gym for over 10 years and I'm throughly disappointed in its current business practices and inherent management and staff. It used to be a 24 hour gym and that was watered down to no days out of the week now. Half the cardio machines are in disrepair, the lockers in the locker room broken or barely usable and they have the audacity to turn around and exponentially raise prices with no benefits. I've been grandparented the $99 annual fee since I signed up. My contract ended on June 27th and the very next day the app said I wasn't even in the system. When speaking to the manager on site, he told me once your contract is up you're basically a new client to them with no compassion for previous patronage of their business for however long. I said ok, so how much thinking maybe $150 or $180... For the classic, the annual fee is $280. $15 a month times 12 months is $180. To which he replied then you have to add a pro rated fee and sign up fee. Nothing is waived or could possibly be waived. I just said ok and left and they'll never regain my business with that model. I took a 3 minute drive to XSport at Bay Plaza Mall, which I heard ppl were switching to years ago but I stayed loyal to planet fitness and after touring their gym signed right up. I was impressed by their pool, basketball courts, workout equipment, group classes and self spa rooms. What sold me without a doubt is that they are open 24/7/365! I ended paying $479 for 2 years which works out to $20 a month and I have all the benefits of the "so called Black Card". Planet fitness did me a favor forcing me outside because they have nothing to offer than a poorly managed establishment where you have to search for paper to clean your equipment and you're useless to them unless you're staying at home and sending money without utilizing your membership. Long story short, I kno after all of that, don't bother wasting your time or money there and check out the XSport gym. I'm not being paid to say this, nor am getting credit for anyone signing up but if you've read this review you care for an honest shot to get healthy and in shape at a quality gym that cares for its customers with benefits that match your hard...
Read moreI was a member at planet fitness starting January 18th, 2023. Unfortunately I was involved in a very bad car accident a week later January 27th, 2023. I sustained injuries that made me physically incapable of performing in a gym let alone my every day life. I went to planet fitness’s Gunhill location on October 1st, 2023 and spoke with manager Sam, in regards to a refund. I was told before hand via phone that as long as I had documentation to prove injuries and the date of the car accident I would be refunded. Sam stated via check within 14-16 days. I then received a call on October 4th from Sam denying the refund due to the time frame in which I reached out to cancel. I was not only in a coma but sustained a concussion and many other injuries, I under went surgeries and recovery time that still cont. My health was my main priority for the past couple months and I’m now finally well enough to dig into finances. I understand policies but based on the circumstances of this situation, I would expect this to be handled in a more sensitive manner. I’m not sure why the time frame of when I cancelled is important but I do know this doesn’t seem fair based on the circumstances. I wasn’t unable to contact Planet fitness due to being in a vegetative state. As I also explained to Sam at Planet Fitness’s Gunhill Location that I have not once used the facility due to my injuries as stated above, which should also be able to be verified based on their check in log. This was an unforeseen circumstance that I wouldn’t wish on anyone. If the manager Sam didn’t think the refund was possible he should’ve stated that he would get back to me with an answer, not say he cancelled my membership and processed a refund, only to later call and tell me the refund wasn’t possible at all. I also asked to speak with corporate or someone higher up and was denied that by Sam as well. I am currently Looking to receive a refund for nothing more or less than the amount I was charged,...
