I came to CrossFit Kailua full of hesitation and fear. I was going through difficulty with some medical issues and tired of not feeling good about myself. I had been an athlete all my life, but let myself go physically a few years ago, and needed to feel better. Coach Gilbert reassured me from the first meeting, it was going to be okay. He said it was going to be hard, but it'd be worth it. He let me know everyone was going to be learning and that he'd be there to help us out.
After the first class, I WAS HOOKED!!!!
Yup, it was hard!... But I couldn't wait to go back to the next class...and the next... Friends noticed, in just a couple weeks, I looked different. Well, I felt different!! My medical issue (anemia) got worse on Week 3 of our 6 week program, I let Coach Gil Know that I'd still come to class and try. He was right there letting me know he was proud of me and pushed me, yet asked how I was feeling without feeling sorry or letting anyone know what was going on. We made such great friends in this short time, WOW!!! We laughed, we sweat, we worked hard together, and we've all succeeded! Thanks Coach Gil, and all my New You partners for one of the BEST THINGS I've (finally) done for myself!!!! Even the veteran CF members have welcomed us with open arms! I cannot wait to be a full time member and continue on the awesome adventure!!!! Thank you...
Read moreIf you're ever on the island I highly recommend dropping in on this box. Not only do they have the most beautiful backdrop for a box, but the people there are pretty amazing.
We arrived in the middle of the 8am wod and everyone was getting after it. We were immediately greeted by Amber, one of the members, who said they were expecting us. Their website has the waiver forms so they make it quick and efficient for a drop in.
My first impression was that it reminded me of the box back home, everyone very friendly. The coach Vince, checked us in and we got started on the wod. He did a great job starting off with some group mobility, then some empty barbell work to work on mechanics before the lifting. He did a good job paying attention to each member and giving feedback when appropriate.
After we were done, we stayed and chatted with the members a bit and took pictures. I've visited other boxes on the island and this one definitely has that vibe of a Crossfit Ohana you would want to be a apart of. Thanks Coach Gil, Vince, Amber and the rest for showing us Aloha love! ...
Read moreI'll admit, I had a chip on my shoulder in regards to CrossFit for a long time and it wasn't until I became pregnant actually that I went to CrossFit Kailua more regularly -- mostly because it was the only group fitness that spent so much time emphasizing and normalizing modification of the workouts (for pregnancy, varied fitness levels, injury, whatever!) It kept me moving through both a singleton and twin pregnancy 😮💨, but I stayed for the community. Becoming a mom can feel like you've lost membership to a lot of clubs that used to feel like home to you. And I get why a lot of moms accept isolation. But CrossFit Kailua has helped me stay connected to myself, offered a stable community, and welcomed me to workout while bringing my children. I feel a sense of belonging, community, connection, the excitement of progression, and of course, athleticism. I can honestly say 3 kids later I'm the fittest I've ever been and I constantly get asked by strangers what my "postpartum secret is." 100%, it's this place....
