We book the Chinaman's Hat Tour for September 7, 2017 at 9am. We wanted to get there early to beat the heat. The directions to the meeting place were very clear and easy to get to. We were warmly greeted by Tru and Jake, who were our guides. They were AMAZING! With a little instruction and safety briefing, we were well on our way kayaking to Chinaman's Hat.
The tide was low, and some of us tipped over a few times, lol. Tru and Jake were very helpful and encouraging. They helped us make it through in one piece. The best part of the kayak was seeing two Sea Turtles along our journey to Chinaman's Hat. It was an awesome sight to see. The Sea Turtles we're "hugging" each other, so we thought it best to let them be.
Once we landed on the island, Tru told us the Legend of Mokoli'i, or as we know it, Chinaman's Hat. It was great to learn of the island's story and more of the Hawai'ian culture. After storytime with Tru, we started our hike to the top of the island. We opted to chose the easier path, verses the local path. It was still a challenging hike to say the least. But once we reached the top, it was all worth it. We spent quite a bit of time up there, taking pictures and enjoying the beautiful scenery. It was breathtaking! The weather was still cool and we were relaxing in a nice breeze at the top.
After we soaked in all the scenery and took a boatload of pictures, we started to scale back down the side of the island, back to our kayaks. Tru and I joked there should be a water slide at the top, but we did slide a bit on the dirt trail down, haha. Once we safety climbed down, we kayaked back. We saw more Sea Turtles again! They may have been the same ones from before, but we were just happy to see them. Good news is none of us tipped over on the way back.
When we got to shore, Tru was kind enough to take a few last group pictures of us with Chinaman's Hat in the background. We thanked them for the tour and were very grateful they were with us. Tru and Jake were very professional, knowledgeable, encouraging, and so much fun to be around. I would definitely book...
Read moreMy husband and I booked two activities: hiking and kayaking. We had a great time with Alex from Active Oahu Tours this morning. First we went on a hike to see a large waterfall. The hike involved trekking in the river and climbing up and down from rock to rock. Some parts were more challenging than others, but Alex was always there to give us a helping hand, if needed. He reminded us of slippery rocks, and pointed out interesting things to see along the way. He also told us to take breaks whenever we wanted to and never once rushed us or made us feel like he was on a time schedule.
The best part was that was no one on the trail until the very end when we ran into a neighbor who was taking his dog out for a walk. We had the entire trail to ourselves -- there was no way we would have found this trail nor knew where to navigate on the trail without Alex. I would highly recommend the hiking tour with Active Oahu Tours.
After we were done hiking, we drove over to Kualoa Park for our kayak tour. Alex quickly set up all the equipment and off we were. Alex gave us a tutorial on help to paddle, and gave us safety tips. He also let us know that he is CPR-certified, in case anything were to happen. We kayaked over to the chinaman's hat (Mokoli'i), docked, and climbed up to the top (almost). Towards the top required us to do some rock climbing which neither my husband nor I have done before. It was quite scary given that we were free-climbing with no safety nets, ropes, but Alex made us feel very comfortable. He guided us step by step, gave us the confidence to keep going, and helped us when we weren't sure where to step. After we came down, we soaked in the water for a little bit, then kayaked back to end the tour.
All in all, I would highly recommend Active Oahu Tours. Alex was friendly, professional, and very knowledgeable. You will definitely have...
Read moreLast time i used Active Oahu was back in 2021 when they were supplying kayaks at Kualoa Beach Park. While i was looking for the same service, i noticed that they didn’t provide the kayaks at the beach park anymore due to changes in Hawaii laws. Had to get them in Kailua at their business. I contacted the company and spoke to Michael and he answered all of my questions and concerns, very friendly. Thank you!
Getting to Kailua from North Shore was an easy drive and getting into the business was smooth. I didn’t catch the guy’s name who helped us, but if you were the buff dude wearing a Barry’s tank top, thank you for your help and showing us how to put the kayak on the car and strapping it down. Appreciate you a lot!
We had no problems driving the kayak to Kualoa. I had to put my big girl muscles on taking it down and putting it back up on the car with my boyfriend. It was a bit windy, so the foam pads kept falling off, but we improvised and held them down with towels.
We made it to the top of Mokoli’i, but i think that will be our one and done! We were so scared, thought we were going to die, but we made it lol.
And thank you to buff man Barry’s tank top dude for recommending Buzz’s Original Steakhouse to us. I know you mentioned Lanikai Brewing Company and the other beer place that haoles go to lol, but we like going to spots that the locals personally like and we LOVED Buzz’s. My poor self got drunk after one mai tai, but the food was pretty tasty.
We’ll definitely book with you guys again when we check out The Mokes!
Solid stuff! See...
