After 6 months of near daily attendance, I can tell you that EOS has helped me change my life. In this review, I’ll cover the best and worst aspects of this gym, from the perspective of a formerly fat 54 year old dude.
THE VIBE/ATMOSPHERE/PEOPLE/STAFF Always clean and welcoming, this location is miles better than the one other location I’ve visited (Erlich Rd). Why? 1) It’s a larger, newer, stand-alone facility not being dragged down by a shopping center like the Erlich location is. 2) The sauna is bigger, hotter, cleaner, and better, and 3) the people I’ve met there have been mostly awesome (except for the one super old guy carving his feet and clipping his toenails right next to the hot tub. Gross, dude. Do you have a home?)
A minor negative is that the ambient lights in the theater are much brighter than at Erlich, and the speakers are too quiet. If captions aren’t on, most dialog is lost to the din of the machines.
I’ve spent most of my life feeling pretty certain about what I enjoy, which is why my only prior gym experience included a college-required membership for a PE credit and a short stint at a “meathead” gym 20 years ago.
I enjoy EOS and am grateful such a place exists at such a reasonable price. They’ve nailed the model and I’d imagine they’ll scale very effectively. Where do I buy stock?
PERSONAL TRAINING EOS offers a complimentary session for new members and I waited to have mine until I’d been regularly attending for about 6 weeks.
The session started with a sit-down discussion of my fitness goals, injuries, diet, and supplements. I was very clear that my primary goal was establishing consistency so that I can age with energy. I told him I didn’t want to get wrecked and be too sore to come everyday- but that I did want to learn how to use the machines and have a workout plan that was right for my goals.
He listened and I felt heard, but then he wrecked me anyway and I was too sore for several days after the session. Other than travel, these are the only days I’ve missed in six months of membership and I really wish it had gone another way. I was willing to hire a trainer but don’t know if the one I had is representative of the others.
My sense is that who you get makes all the difference, but I don’t how to figure out who on staff is actually right for me. Maybe someone there will see this and can help? Or maybe, as the trainer implied, pain is good and I’m supposed to love feeling like I can barely walk?
CULTURE Generally, people are courteous of one another here. Most people clean up after themselves and wipe down machines. I’ve met a lot of friendly people and haven’t witnessed anybody being too weird or creepy, apart from toenail guy.
Yes, there are a few plate slammers and bro-clusters- but this brand doesn’t seem to attract many roid-ragers.
Yes, there are a few packs of teenagers in the afternoons- but that’s awesome. I wish I’d had EOS in my life at their age.
And yes, there are women in workout clothes- but this doesn’t seem like the kind of place that disrespects them. I haven’t seen men being creepy here and I hope that’s accurate to their experience.
And yes, there are families here too. I love seeing so many mother/daughter/father/son/spouses working out together— and especially the grandfather/grandson in the pool swimming laps together so frequently— keep it up!
Overall, I’m incredibly happy with EOS and am looking forward to continuing my fitness journey. So far, I’ve lost 42 lbs, gained a ton of endurance and strength, and feel healthier than I have...
Read moreI wanted to take a moment to share my honest feedback and express some concerns about my experiences at EOS Gym - Ballantrae.
First and foremost, I must commend EOS Gym for its amazing facilities, stellar equipment (can't stress this enough), and great variety of classes. The overall environment is generally pleasant, and I appreciate the efforts put into creating a positive fitness experience.
However, I would like to address a significant issue that has been affecting my workout routine as I'm sure I'm not the only person. I may be alone in this, so if anything it'll give some people who disagree a laugh. It has become increasingly challenging to follow a structured fitness plan due to the constant socializing, playground-like feel, and lack of focus among a younger crowd. 13. That's all you have to be. Without an adult. While I understand and appreciate the social aspect of the gym, it becomes frustrating when it hampers the ability to stay focused and make the most out of every workout session. This is vitally important to those individuals who may frequent after a workday/work shift.
Moreover, I would like to express my concerns regarding the safety in the parking lot area. There have been instances where the behavior of some individuals, particularly younger gym-goers, has raised concerns about the overall security and well-being of members. It is essential that EOS Gym takes proactive measures to ensure the safety of everyone using the facility, both inside and outside the gym premises. I understand it's not EOS's main responsibility for what happens outside, but maybe this could be food for thought for the higher-ups. Not sure how to fix this one, but most of the time there are no spaces available, so you're hunting for a spot no matter the time. If you're parked in the back, it's like playing frogger to get to the front door. Between the people speeding through to find a spot (speed bumps may help), and literal burnouts from some kid with a Camaro (eff the guy, btw), it's increasingly becoming a hindrance if you're within, or even close to the high-peak hours.
I believe that by addressing these concerns and implementing necessary measures, EOS Gym can further enhance the already commendable experience it provides to its members. Encouraging a balance between socializing and maintaining a respectful and focused fitness environment would greatly benefit all gym-goers.
Once again, I want to emphasize that my intention is to provide constructive feedback in the hopes of contributing to the ongoing improvement of EOS Gym. I genuinely value the positive aspects of the gym and believe in its potential to create a remarkable fitness community (for all ages).
I will most likely be cancelling and going somewhere else less convenient (rather than this one on the way home). For those of you reading this review to see if it's worth the trip there, if you're looking for cardio and minimal activities, this place is probably fine. If you're looking to actually get your weights on and don't want to feel like your baby-sitting, then you'll probably want to...
Read moreI love this gym. It is like no other gym here in Tampa. It has cutting edge features that I have not experienced before, like unique recovery equipment, weight machines that automatically set the weight and a 360 body scan scale that gives all of your body metrics. On top of that I have found the best personal trainer ever.
Eos has a good variety of machines and free weights plus plenty of treadmills. I go between 9:00 am and 1:00 and have always been able to get one. There is a screened in area if I want to train outside and a turf covered area in the back where I do stretching, core and balance.
The two areas where they offer something different is their Personal Training and Recovery.
Their personal training here is the best. I am sooo happy that I have found such a good personal trainer, Maryna. And their Personal Training app adds a whole other level to my training. Between my trainer and the app, everything I need to do at Eos is laid out for me. Maryna puts the warm up and stretching workouts she wants me to do before and after I train with her. Then for the days that I work out by myself, she gives me workouts to support my overall plan. All of these are tailored to my body. This was one thing that sold me on the gym. The money I pay for personal training covers so much more than just my training sessions. I work out more regularly because I know I just have to show up and do what is on the app. How-to videos accompany each exercise.
Their recovery equipment is the other thing that drew me to the gym. They have recovery equipment I have not seen at other gyms. There are Cryolounges, chairs that offers hot and cold therapy, Massage Chairs plus an area that has compression boots to use after leg day. There is a sauna and hot tub that I use sometimes for recovery.
I weigh on the Evolt scale about once a month to track my progress. This machine does a body scan that gives your weight, body composition, visceral fat, lean body mass, etc and shows muscle gain or loss on arms and legs. I get a print out that shows all the details, then Maryna explains the results and makes recommendations about exercises, supplements or my diet. I love that I can track my progress with numbers right there in black and white.
Although I am mostly focused on training, there are other features for folks who are interested. Group Fitness Classes, Cycling studio, and cinema room to watch movies while doing cardio.
The Staff has always treated me in a friendly and professional way. Nick, who is training director, has been very supportive. When I signed up, he paired me with the right trainer and I get emails occasionally checking on how my personal training is going. When I went on vacation for a month, they paused my membership without a problem.
I highly recommend this place. It has made a huge difference in my fitness. If you are looking for a good place to work out, recover and get help with your motivation and...
