The Book Burrow might be the coziest space in all of Pflugerville. I met the owner while getting coffee nearly a year ago and she extended an invitation for me to visit. I followed on social media, where they dedicate themselves to being visible, accessible and welcoming. I was finally able to visit with my two kids today and regret waiting so long.
Everyone was incredibly sweet and patient with my 4 and 6 year old, including the two store cats. We stayed and browsed for about an hour (and by browsed, I mean my kids bounced between trying to entice the cats to play and continuously picked the toys off the shelves to play with while I unsuccessfully encouraged them to pick out some books to bring home) and despite their inability to settle I never felt like we were an inconvenience or rushed to leave.
On a trip to the bathroom (which my 4 year old needs without fail any time we are out, so I could create a rankings page on public bathrooms around town were there ever a need for it) I was pleasantly surprised at how immaculately clean and well stocked it was (even with a public ātake what you needā personal goods station).
Without my kids in tow, I could easily see myself spending a few hours curled up in the comfy reading space they provide, or taking advantage of the game room to sit and spend time with a couple of friends. This is store is as ābuy localā as your can get, and it is so apparent that the owner and everyone who contributes puts their heart and...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI have felt bad ever since yesterday how I was welcomed and treated on 05-27-2025 by the Asian clerk. I have shopped and purchased books and DVDs from your store numerous of times since my first visit during the summer of 2024. However, after how I was treated yesterday I will not ever shop in your bookstore. I walked in the store yesterday and the Asian lady just stared at me for about 15 seconds as if she was making a judgement about me because I am an African-American male. I didn't feel welcomed after her long 15 second stare. I browsed around looking at the different bookcases. Then I proceeded to go into a room where I purchased an Eishenhower biography three months ago when the Caucasian owner checked me out. The Asian clerk told me yesterday that the room was a storage room and she closed the door after I walked out. The door was opened when I walked in yesterday and the other three times that I shopped at the store. I felt so uncomfortable afterwards and profiled because I am an African-American male. It is evident in the Austin area that African Americans are not liked and wanted in the Austin area. I will not be shopping at Book Burrow ever again. You have just...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThe Book Burrow is really just a room in the very back of the Pflugerville Flea Market (so no "Book Burrow" sign out front) but it packs a lot into a small space! There a great variety of new and used books, even a corner of cheap mystery and romance paperbacks. I went with a graphic novel I'd been eyeing for a while. Unusual for a flea-market stall, it's staffed by an energetic book-lover who was great to chat to! Highly recommended to check out overall. They have some sort of match-the-book-to-a-drink event coming up on New Year's Eve and also have an audiobook deal worth looking into. Definitely no slouching here!
EDIT: They will take in used books, and I ended up trading in volumes of this graphic novel for discounts on the next one, so I just kept trading out books all week. Then I attended their New Year's kick off at the Three Legged Goat wine bar and had a great time! They had the author come sign books and everything. I love that a community has formed around this small bookstore and I wish them all the...
