I went in with my wife to buy a basic men’s wedding band—nothing fancy. I was crystal clear: 14k yellow gold, 5mm wide, size 8.5. I even explained upfront that I track gold prices—14k gold is about 58.5% pure, and with current market rates hovering around $62 per gram, a ring like that (weighing roughly 6–7 grams) should cost about $400–450 in raw gold.

The sales associate, clearly not used to customers who know what they’re talking about, got defensive fast. He quoted me $1,300—for a plain band he wasn’t even making in-house. He literally said he’d order it. So let’s be clear: no craftsmanship, no custom work, just a markup of nearly 200%+ for doing what I could do myself online.
