If you want comics and nothing else, that is what you'll find here. Huge selection of back issues, as well as the obligatory current issues and hardcover collections. There's no frills or really anything else at all. I usually tag along with my boyfriend. I'm low-key into comics, not a fanatic or aficionado. But not a neophyte. I usually can find a few random things to try to hold my attention while he dives deep into back issues.
We've been here about half a dozen times. Last time we were here there was 3 or 4 employees organizing comics and having a loud, profanity-filled conversation that they seemed to obviously hope other people would be overhearing wherein they were deriding or mocking something Marvel/DC/both related... It was just a turn-off, and seemed kind of a silly thing for store employees to be doing. I'm not a prude about casual swearing, but if I was their boss, I wouldn't be letting them speak like that in front of half a dozen customers. Shows a lack of social/situational awareness.
But that's really just a one-off (I hope!) and doesn't affect my likelihood to go back or not.
What would be more likely to affect whether we keep going back is the fact that unless you want to root through back-issues of comics, there's literally no reason to go here.
Parking is tough to find on Hawthorne, you may have to walk a block or two to get to the store--not a deal breaker, at least parking is free. Not the cleanest or nicest part of town, there were some people sitting a few doorways down doing some questionable stuff that we tried to walk by...
Read moreThe owner of the shop looked at about a quarter of my collection and then informed me she couldn't buy any comics from me because there were stolen collections going around. I feel she profiled me. Made a JUDGMENT that a person like me would never have a valuable comic collection. As a responsible citizen and shop owner, wouldn't it have been prudent of Debbie to take note of the comics in the collection and tip authorities? And when selling comics, it's understood that any payment is going to be in check form and an ID is going to need to be seen. In fact, if she was worried about being out $ paid due to the comics being stolen, why not propose something like, "look I need to cover myself so I'll offer you this much but I need to put a one week hold on the check so we can insure that these are legit. Instead, she basically implies that I'm a thief. I felt humiliated, embarrassed, and belittled. Rhis was the single worst experience I have ever had.in a comic shop, a place that normally brings me joy. Also the atmosphere in this place is LAME. I would recommend Cosmic Monkey or Fallout or any shop other than the dump known as Excalibur Comics and the extremely rude owners of said establishment. Two thumbs down and...
Read moreI'm recently interested in comics again after 20 years, brought back into the fold because I was trying to get my kids to enjoy the medium the way I did as a boy. They recommended some recent series, like Lucifer,100 Bullets and the graphic novel, We3, based on my tastes and even put a collection of old "G.I. Joe A Real American Hero" stories in my hand that almost made me cry...oh the nostalgia! And, yes, it's not a cannon Joe story unless it reads, "A Real American Hero" and is written by American Vet, Larry Hama, who started the comic back in the 80s. I didn't know any of that before mentioning off hand that I liked another comic by the same writer when I was in junior high. That's the kind of fans they are. I also got some books for my kids like the new Black Panther, Avengers and a collection of witch stories from around the world put out by the Jim Henson company. My kids loved that one! The crew here cares about the art of the comic book and want you to as well but more importantly they want you to love what you walk out with. Whenever I'm out west again, Excalibur will be in my...
