Kroger — Local services in Portsmouth

I typically love Kroger, but this location has gone downhill. I utilize the Kroger pharmacy, and even though I typically pay a little bit more for prescriptions than I would at Walmart, I love the customer service and convenience of this Kroger pharmacy and at least I know I'm getting a $2 Pharmacy reward coupon and fuel points. The $2 pharmacy reward coupon clearly states that there is a limit to one reward redemption per transaction. I was just at the self-checkout completing the first of what was going to be three transactions I was trying to complete, and I was trying to be kind and letting the lady know when she came over to approve my first coupon transaction that I was going to have two other transactions. She rudely only said, "no ma'am, we had a meeting about that yesterday." I'm not a child by any means, she could have used more words to explain that apparently this locations policy had changed, but she didn't. It was just a very rude and unnecessary way to speak to a person when there could have been a more gentle approach. Even if the policy has changed, it didn't need to be presented in that manner. Therefore, I completed my second transaction only because my teenager was at home looking forward to the food items I was purchasing. If it wasn't for that reason, I wouldn't have purchased anything, but since I needed to bring home the food items I went ahead and completed my second transaction and left my basket with all of the other items out of principle. I’m in the military I work 7:30am-7:40pm. I leave my house at 5:45 and don’t get home until 8 or 9 sometimes if traffic is bad. I rely on this store for groceries and to pay bills because auto pay can be a pain sometimes even with a military paycheck. Well tonight I stop on my way home to rent a carpet cleaner I arrive at 8:30 pm and they do not close until 11. Awesome I have plenty of time right. Well I go inside and I get my wife dinner and head to check out where I’m told I have to go to customer service/money services to rent the carpet cleaner but I can pay for my items there, okay no problem, I head to the counter and set my things down. I proceed to wait for 45 minutes at this counter, I tried to locate an associate to assist me and they are all gone. None in the isles no one at any register including self checkout. So I call the store that I am waiting in multiple times and no one answers the phone. I can hear the phone next to me as it rings and no one answered it. I finally see an associate and ask for assistance who proceeded to tell me that they are going on break and can’t help. After waiting another 10 minutes I was approached by an associate who informed me that the customer/money services desk is closed even tho there is a sign on the desk saying open until 10. Update (June 2024): Wow, this place has gone downhill.

Fewer items/variety, especially for produce which often has flies on it.

The store is rundown in general. AC was leaking so someone set a bucket of top of a shelf to catch the drippings. But the bucket was full and overflowing onto merchandise and a big puddle on the floor.

Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, etc. is now kept in a separate, gated section because they expect you to wait in a separate checkout line & do a whole separate transaction just to pay for those items. They don't make you do that for pharmacy items (like Tylenol or other pills/medications) nor for beer/wine! It makes no sense and the staff are rude about it to boot.

Vegan selection is still decent, but that's literally the only positive here.

Oh, and let's not forget the time another customer yelled at and threatened me and my husband while we were in the checkout line. The staff did nothing except gather around to watch and then treated us like the problem when we complained that no one - not even the security staff or management - had intervened. They didn't even ask the yelling/threatening people to leave the store.

This store is awful. Do yourself a favor and go literally anywhere else.
