First fo all I want exclude the star but I had to select one to write this post. Secondly I am using my girlfriend's phone also so don't mistake this post is from a female.
Yesterday I was very disappointed when I went to Aldi on 3511 Broadway in Quincy Ill . Minutes before store closing time on 6-11-2019. I am a regular costumer that attempted to shop for a case of water but was denied to enter the store.
Several minutes before the store closed this day a couple of white female separate costumers then I, a black male approached the door and all except I was allowed to come in and shop. I was about five or so steps away from the door and a employee hurried and locked the door prevented me from walking in and stated we are closed. So I looked at the time and it was three minutes to 8pm and I said to a employee it's not 8pm yet all I wanted was a case of water and she said again we are closed. I believe at that time responded saying that was discriminatory because she let two white shoppers in but denied a black shopper. So I requested to speak to a manager. A moment went by then comes a manager, I see her approach while reading her lips I believe she was saying we're closed. So I signed with my finger to come here then she came out the door on the exit side and said they were closed and I tried to tell her that I was at the door before 8pm when an employee locked the door after she let two white female costumers in and all I wanted was a case of water then she replied that she did it for security reasons. So I repeated security reasons! Then I asked her did she think I was a threat? So I ask for the store company's number so I can make a complaint and she said no. Then I believe I replied that was racist and walked back to my vehicle. So I drove away but right before I exit the parking lot I pulled in a parking space to google Aldi costumer service to report the incident but I couldn't find a contact number. All I seen was a review site I believe so I felt at liberty to at least write a review. About 5 minutes searching or longer pass as I set while writing the review all of sudden surprisingly a police officer was at my window asking what's going on. So I explained all what happen and she even expressed her disappointment with the employee and said she would have been upset also.( But her response was nastier)! She was real cordial until she wanted me to identify myself. When she asked for my ID I replied I mean no disrespect but I feel like you asking for my ID is irrelevant. Then I was threatened that I would be arrested after I asked did I break any laws or did anything wrong and she said I didn't so I said it is no need for me to disclosed any personal information. Then she said since I'm operating a vehicle she wanted to check to see if a had a valid drivers license or if I had any warrants. Then another police car pulled up as I attempted to call 911 requesting a supervisor because then I believe the officer was impeding my constitutional rights. So she open my door while asking me again for ID motioning like she was going to snatch me out of the car. Then I told her you're treating me just like the Aldi employees as if I am a criminal and it offends me. At that point I said I am going to comply because I didn't want to be hurt because these type of incidents happening all over the country, and give her my ID but I do not consent to nothing that was happening and said after this is all over I am going to file a formal complaint with the police department because this is unacceptable. So she ran my name in the computer and it checked out clean then said I was free to go. I feel very bad right now as I type this recalling this entire situation. How I feel at this moment? I don't never want to shop at Aldi again in the future! I mean I really can't believe this all happened and that here we are in 2019 and I question how much racism still exits in America!
Aldi as well as the Quincy Ill police department really need to do better when interacting with members of the black...
Read moreI have not been to Aldi for some time, it isn't as convenient as HyVee. However, I shopped Aldi religiously while living in Pennsylvania and recall the days of penny pinching and when I knew my cart total before the checkout (8 years ago?). I had a budget of $75-$100 every 2 weeks, and by God's grace I was able to fill a cart for right around $100. Today, I spent about $136 for about 3/4 a cart full. These days I am shopping for two, instead of four, and splurge on non-GMO and certified organic regularly, when I find it. There were plenty of options today, as Aldi increases its organically sources for suppliers . I am quite amazed at today's grocery tab, especially considering over half my items were organically/sustainably sourced. Kudos to ALDI for this feat at maintaining value and affordability!
I withheld a star for the checkout system. Only one lane with an actual employee cashier and a significant number of self checkout stations. I planned to purchase a gift card so resigned myself to waiting in the 3-4 customer-deep cashier lane. My other issue, I have at most grocery stores --the way the bagger or checker places my purchases into the cart or shopping bags. Why are they not trained to avoid putting canned goods on top of fresh produce...
Read moreI went to Aldi on a Wed night to grab a few produce items. As usual, there were two checkers with extremely long lines. Not only does it take 20 minutes to check out but the checker, Claudia, was EXTREMELY rude, and did not say "hello", "thank you", or "goodbye". She was awful. She proceeded to throw my items into the cart (no surprise there), and as I was finishing my credit card transaction, she continued to throw the items that belonged to the customer behind me, on TOP of my items. I stated that those items were not mine- and she snapped back and said "you do not have a cart".. I was well aware that I did not have a cart, but the customer behind me DID, and she should not have put their items the one that contained my items. She would not wait until I was done, or out of the way before she continued to check other customers out. She tapped her fingers on her cash register like she could wait for us to get going. She had absolutely the WORST patience, the WORST customer service (if you can call it that), and she was flat out rude. This makes me want to never go back to Aldi. Even though they have great produce, and...
