The volunteers at the shelter seem like they really honestly care about the homes that they find for their animals. In relation to the negative review below: the shelter does not let adoptees leave with the animals on the first day they come in. They do quite an extensive background check on potential owners first, including checking with landlords and no less than two personal references before they allow you to take the animals home. We adopted two cats from the shelter a little over a year ago, and when our landlord informed the shelter that we would have to pay a pet owners fee for them (illegal in Massachusetts, by the way) the volunteers worked with us and kept in contact as we debated with the landlord, and eventually we were allowed to adopt our cats. The cats were a little on the skinny side when we brought them home -- understandable, since they have many many cats in their shelter and only so much food -- but they warmed up to us almost immediately, and it was apparent that they were taken great care of during their stay in the shelter. We love our "babies" dearly, and when I sent photos and an update on the pair to the shelter after we'd had them for a year, the response was warm and excited and asking genuinely about the cats. One of the volunteers is fairly blunt, I wish I could remember her name, which might be taken for rudeness if you're sensitive to that kind of stuff, but they were very thorough with the adoption process, they tried to make it as quick as possible, and they actually care about the animals. I would recommend...
Read moreAfter a hard day’s work, on July 25, I came home to find my 15 year old daughter in tears. It appears after a visit to the shelter she found herself being ignored misinformed, given the run around, and if that wasn't enough she felt discriminated and disrespected. She was interested in this cat and was told by one of the workers, Janet, "this cat is already taken", not soon after, a Caucasian couple inquired about the same cat and immediately the worker named Janet took the cat out of the cage and proceeded to give it to the couple. My daughter was given an application by this worker Janet, after my daughter completed the application she was told by another worker at the shelter she could not adopt a cat because my daughter is not 21, yet this kid that looked 12 completed the same application signed it and was told nothing about the age limit. It bothers me that so called adults treat children insignificantly when you’re a different color or race. Another thing, this woman Janet kept inquiring about our financial status and whether we would be able to afford the cat if it got sick or whatever. Not all is lost; my daughter told me she learned a valuable lesson; that she will never treat people the way she...
