How this gym has 4 stars on here... I have no clue. Probably because they encouraged members who were walking in one week to fill out some questionnaire and leave them a 5-star review to boost the rating. Don't trust this 4-star google rating! The 1.5 star on yelp is more in-line with what it actually is.
I've been a member since 2016 and it's always been mediocre (3 stars) but over the last year it's only gotten WORSE. The place is filthy... currently there is an AWFUL smell emanating from the personal training area in the back by the locker rooms. Not sure if there was a roof leak or what, but it smells like disgusting mildew and bacteria. It's a cesspool. The locker rooms never have paper towels and younger members are constantly vaping in there, making it reek of we*d at all times.
I honestly don't even know what the staff does except sit at the desk and say hello because they never go around to rack the weights or MORE IMPORTANTLY monitor the members to make sure they're not breaking the rules. On any given day you can see someone working out shirtless in the main area; a group of 5-6 teenagers filming TikTok's and occupying useful space for others whilst NOT WORKING OUT; members working out on ONE machine for up to 40 minutes while other members are waiting (seriously, I've sat there and timed it on multiple occasions, I start my work out wanting to use the machine their on... move on to do 3-4 other workouts in the same muscle group, all while looking over at the machine I wanted to originally use, STILL being used by the same person). Members will often put some sort of aromatic substance into the sauna, making it unbearable for those of us who suffer from asthma or are sensitive to strong smells. Oh yeah, and there is ALWAYS broken machine, especially the ones with the resistance wires, and they don't get fixed for 3-4 weeks later. (probably being broken by dumb teenagers misusing them, something the staff could catch if they monitored members behaving correctly).
I've noticed the cleaning crews are always changing hands. There may be one or two people who are actually going around the whole gym cleaning it for a month or two, only to end up leaving (I'm assuming for being underpaid and overworked), and then another random cleaning crew arrives to do an even worse job. S/o to the man and woman who were in charge of cleaning in May & June 2023, as they were doing an awesome job and actually keeping the gym clean and the paper towels stocked, but they left.
As many reviews have stated - no one ever racks the weight and it's impossible to find free weights when you're looking for them, as they may be strewn about at any of the 4 corners of the gym.
Seriously, if you have any choice at all, don't pick this gym. I'm at the end of my rope and will be canceling my membership very soon unless changes are made.
Management doesn't seem to care either, they lowered the entry fee to $5 for a bunch of crocs and pajama wearing teenagers, while my monthly rate is still where it's been at since 2016 (7x that amount), so it's clear they're just trying to milk it for the $$$, as there is no overhead costs in running the place since they never invest in keeping the place updated or clean.
I will say the staff members at the front desk are friendly and greet you and say goodbye to you and if you ever have any questions, they are happy to answer them. But outside of that, this place has no redeeming qualities.
Update: it’s gotten even worse. The cable fly machine has been broken since before the 4th of July holiday. It is now well past Labor Day and there doesn’t seem to be any desire to fix the machine in sight....
Read moreI swtiched to LA from Planet Fitness because they had more amenities. I am happy with the switch but there is still a lot of room for improvement.
When I first started going here they had these awful girls working the front desk, always with an attitude when they scanned you in, constantly on their phones and having friends lean up on the counter chatting with them. Just very childish behavior and not a very welcoming experience. They since have seemed to let some of these girls go as I have not seen them in a little while. However there really is only 1 blond women who works the desk who is actually welcoming and always tells you to have a good workout.
Some of the members of this gym also do not seem to feel obligated to wipe down the machines after they have used them even though there is ample paper towels and stations available. This is unfortonite but it seems that the management has turned an eye to this when they should have additional housekeeping on shift during peak hours going around and cleaning the machines as they are dusty and covered in sweat drips most of the time (even in the mid afternoon during non peak hours).
There were also a lot of rumors before i joined about theft in the locker rooms. I had not experienced this but today while I was at work I received an email about this.( I work in a retail store where the local law enforcement agencies constantly email us about persons of interest for credit fraud, identity theft, ect. ) And through my work email I had to find out this was occurring while the gym has failed to post anything about this at the location or inform any of their members.
--This is more then just people breaking locks and stealing your stuff, there are 2 men who appear to have managed to get into the lockers with out breaking the locks. They steal your credit cards and valuables and then go to local retailers (in Roxbury, East Hanover, Millburn, Paramus, Little Falls, and Clifton) which begs to question if this is an inside job. Why would someone who attended this gym then go shopping in these areas.
I had been attending this gym for about 6 months now going at least 3x a week, but I do not know if I would renew my membership...
Read moreEPILOGUE - I have become a full member in the years since first posting a review of Esporta as a guest. My gym usage consists solely of swimming in the pool, which is great - except when it's not, as it is frequently closed because of an astonishing lack of basic maintenance. Keeping a pool (from an above ground backyard unit to an Olympic pool) clear and clean is down to assiduously staying on top of your chemical application, and but for some reason astonishing it doesn’t get done here . As I write this on a Monday morning, the pool is cloudy and closed. One of my confidants gave me a heads up Saturday afternoon two days prior that the pool was getting cloudy. I'm came in the next morning (Sunday) and sure enough it was getting bad. The swim school people cancelled their classes, and 25 mins into my workout the front desk kid came in and informed me and a couple of other swimmers that the pool was going to close. The chemical failures seem to happen over the weekend. These closings, much to my chagrin, occur with a numbing regularity, causing a major disruption to my workout schedule. Yes, I can go down to LA Fitness in Parsippany, but it's out of the way and time is money..... come on, Esporta/LA Fitness, get it together!
I'm currently a member of the YMCA, which was closed for New Years. Manager Kevin let me come into LA as a guest to get my...
