My wife and I were told Tomâs Music Trade was a great place to buy vinyls. So we went. Dear lord. Itâs almost overwhelming the sheer amount of music in this store.
We got to the street where the shop is located and realized we had no change for the meter. So we headed into Tomâs and tried to change out a couple bucks. Tom (who we didnât know was Tom at the time) reached into the register and pulled out a couple dimes. That got us 2 hours. Guess where we spent most of that time. Yep. Flipping through vinyls at Tomâs Music Trade.
I walked out of there with around 20 vinyls and walked out with a couple fairly rare albums. Well one was the anniversary edition of Core by Stone Temple Pilots. I didnât even know it existed until I saw it behind the counter. I got a good deal on it too.
Tomâs passion for vinyls shows in this store. Heâs got memorabilia all over the place and the volume of vinyls is incredible. The prices are reasonable and he carries OPs and reissues.
The icing on the cake was his dog. đ He decided he didnât want us to leave and blocked the door. đ Weâd been petting him the whole time we were flipping through vinyls. We, of course, couldnât walk out without one last scratch on the head. I guess we paid the toll to exit. He let us out. đ Such a sweet dog.
Tom is an extremely nice guy with lots of stories and heâs very helpful! We live in HarCo Maryland and the visit was worth every second of travel. I purchased several albums here this year, both new and used, all competitively priced. Last week I found a 1970 pressing of Chicago Transit Authority. This was a 2nd year pressing of CTAs first album, a double lp album. Marked $10. I've owned this album, but never on vinyl; always loved it. Tom said he had just gotten it, it was the only copy in the store and he hadn't had a chance to place it with other albums in the store. I also found a near mint '67 album from the Butterfield Blues Band.
The CTA double LP. The cover was just above poor, the disc sleeves were original (dated)1970 paper with advertising from Columbia, for posters of bands for $1.50. Cool to have, but I planned on replacing with poly. Those sleeves weren't doing the vinyl any favors after 54 years. Tom was concerned for me, the LPs might have skips. I said it was worth a $10 chance.
I gave the vinyl a good deep clean (manually). I listened from beginning to end. I then gave them a second clean, in hopes of removing anything the Ortofon stylus moved/dislodged. After that second cleaning the sound was nearly flawless! Only had the occasional click, very few and that may still disappear. VG+, 9 out of 10! I am so pleased to have this early pressing of one of the best albums of the Era.
Thank you, Tom.
P.S. Tom doesn't run his shop like it's a private audiophile club, like some shops do. He will leave you in peace to find your treasures, but is always available to...
