10 Box Cost Plus is a stripped-down, no-frills warehouse style grocery where you supposedly pay the store's actual cost (the price on the item) plus 10% at the checkout. Prices are good but it's a mixed bag in reality, really hit and miss.
First, the cons: Much of the produce is of mediocre quality or else not fresh, with fresh, high quality items dotted in here and there. A lot of grocery items are in boxes and bins, so the packaging gets beat up. Specialty and gourmet items are nearly non-existent, and the health and beauty aids section is tiny. There's no bakery, deli, pharmacy, health foods, organics, or real florist, and you bag your groceries yourself, all in the name of lowest price, which is good or bad depending on what you're wanting most from your grocer. Although the store appears reasonably clean, it always smells very bad, with a strong, strange chemical odor.
Now, the pros. To me, the real reason to use 10 Box is the amazingly low prices on bulk meats, such as whole pork loins and Boston butts, big bags of bulk-pack chicken, whole beef sirloins and ribeyes, etc. I buy when it's on special, cut it into meal-sized portions and freeze it.
However, that doesn't mean the overall prices store-wide aren't low as well. They generally easily beat Wal-Mart's prices, although some items here and there are slightly higher. You have to add the 10% in your head and compare prices to spot good bargains, which are plentiful.
They also have an UNBELIEVABLE variety of Hispanic spices, grocery and produce items. This 10 Box clearly caters specifically to the Latino market, and over half the customers you see in the store at any time are Latino.
I give it 4 stars for the great bulk meat prices, which though are by far still the cheapest in Russellville have recently increased sharply. Keep a close eye on the weekly specials (especially meats), and if you play your cards right you can save a fortune on certain items, though those true bargains are really the only things I...
Read moreMy 17 year old went to the Money Center for a money order and was told she could not do a purchase of a money order with cash and a debit card(that doesn’t even make sense). Then, when asked to purchase 2 separate money orders, her response was “well, that’s kinda skirting the system but ok.” I called and asked to speak to a manager. The manager was the lady that said all of the above. I asked her why they could not accept cash and a debit card. She said it was a new policy due to fraud. ?? So, I asked her “can you do a money order with cash?” She said “yes.” I asked “can you do a money order with a debit card?” She said “yes.” I said, “ so how is they skirting the system?” There is zero difference in doing it the way she was asked to do it to begin with. She apologized for the inconvenience. For a manager to behave this way and not understand something so simple, and then to make a passive aggressive comment to a...
Read moreSome things are cheaper, some aren't. I enjoy buying tortills there and the corn chips are made right with mesa flour. Just have to know your prices and know you have to add 10 percent. Eggs were $1.09 before percent. They are $1.08 @ Walmart. Mesa flour was $1.92 before percentage. I think it may be about $2.29 other places. Tortillas are $1.82 before percentage, but they are still less after percentage. Everything isn't cheaper. Some of us miss Cost Plus which closed because of them, l heard, but they are pretty good. We wish they...
