A Life-Saving Service for Senior Rescue Dogs ā Mexivet Express.
Where do I even begin? Recently, we rescued two senior, neglected large-breed dogsāone of whom is paralyzedāboth urgently in need of extensive medical care. Between dental cleanings and extractions, repeated lab work, multiple biopsies, ultrasounds, an echocardiogram, and several medications, the quoted cost at a local Los Angeles County vet (with a rescue discount) was over $7,000. The reality of skyrocketing veterinary costs in the U.S. often forces pet owners into heartbreaking decisions, contributing to the overwhelming number of pets surrendered to shelters daily. But I refused to let these two defeated seniors fall victim to this system. With years of experience in animal rescue, including running one of the largest organizations in the country and saving thousands of animals, I knew I had to find an alternative solutionāand I found it with Mexivet Express. After asking around in California rescue circles and doing thorough research, all signs pointed to Mexivet. Their glowing reviews, detailed social media updates, and news features highlighting their founderās compassionate mission gave me the confidence to give them a shot. And let me tell youāit was the best decision I could have made for these dogs.
An Exceptional Process, Start to Finish. Mexivetās process is laid out clearly on their website, with a comprehensive FAQ section. Coordinating with Ashley from the Mexivet team was seamless. From our very first conversation, I knew I was dealing with someone knowledgeable and compassionate. Setting up profiles for the dogs on their app was simple; we uploaded their medical records and outlined everything they needed done. The plan? To complete every procedure in one dayāa logistical feat nearly impossible in the U.S. But Mexivetās collaboration with a network of specialist vets in Tijuana made it achievable. Their organized system allowed them to map out a detailed timeline while keeping us in the loop. On the scheduled day, we drove from Los Angeles to San Diego (a two-hour trip) to meet their drivers at one of three convenient handoff locations. Eric, the driver, was punctual, empathetic, and walked us through the plan, reassuring us with his professionalism and genuine care for the dogs.
World-Class Care Across the Border. Throughout the day, Mexivet kept us updated in real-time, relaying information from the vets after each procedure. Having worked with countless veterinarians across the country, I can confidently say these doctors were top-tier professionals: thorough, knowledgeable, and detail-oriented. We were able to discuss next steps directly with the veterinarians and make decisions on the spot. Medications were provided, and the team broke down the costs transparently, leaving no surprises. When the day was done, Eric returned the dogs to us safely and even shared sweet pictures of them riding comfortably in their spotless vehicle. A Fraction of the Cost, A Mountain of Compassion.
Hereās the part that left me absolutely speechless: the total bill, including transportation, was a fraction of what we were quoted in the U.S. Despite the incredible service and high level of care, the cost was so reasonable it made me wonder why every pet owner isnāt using Mexivetās network. I am a hard sell when it comes to veterinary care, but Mexivet exceeded every expectation and then some. From Ashleyās efficient communication to Ericās kindness and the veterinariansā expertise, this experience was nothing short of extraordinary. Thank you, Ashley, Eric, Anna, and Sakuraāyouāve helped save these dogsā lives, and the work you do for pets and their people is invaluable. MexiCAN, not MexiCANāT. If you have a pet in need of care, donāt walk to your phoneāRUN. This is a service the world needs more of, and Iām endlessly grateful for what Mexivet Express has done for our dogs and...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI had high hopes with MexiVet given all the positive reviews, but I unfortunately had a negative experience and would not recommend them. I found their communication to be disorganized and unprofessional.
As a bit of a background, my dog got sick a few weeks ago. We took her to her regular vet, she didnāt get better, so we wanted her to be seen in TJ for treatment and diagnostics without paying a fortune. Unfortunately, her health took a turn for the worse at the vet in TJ and she passed.
Responses from the āemergencyā phone number were sporadic and inconsistent, even during open hours. I understand they probably are busy and are trying their best to keep up with inquiries, but I donāt think it should be labeled a phone number for emergencies if they arenāt able to respond in a timely fashion as that can be misleading to clients.
Soon after being notified that my dog passed, I received 2 separate invoices for the charges. Both of which had different total amounts, with no explanation about the discrepancy. Not long after that, I received a text message from the billing department saying my final invoice was ready for payment. I get the need to be on top of charging clients, but receiving multiple messages to pay right after my dog died came off as a bit insensitive.
A few days later, I asked about the cremation process. They said my dog's ashes would be delivered to my home. They would follow up with the vet soon to see when her ashes were ready. When I asked where she was being cremated, they said they would ask the vet and get back to me. I never heard back about that.
The worst part was communication regarding the delivery of her ashes. The day after the above conversation, I received a text around 6pm saying the driver is in line at the border with my dog's ashes and is headed for the Mission Valley pickup site. I was shocked and confused because: (1) both the invoice and the person I talked to the day before stated it would be a home delivery and (2) I had received no prior notification that the ashes would be ready today and was not available to drive down to Mission Valley to pick up the ashes. They said I would need to pay extra for home delivery. The texts were unapologetic and unsympathetic - they came across as insensitive and money-grabby.
I expressed my confusion and frustration at why I didn't receive any prior notice. At that point they realized that they had dropped the ball with communication, and apologized. They said the driver tried to call me twice (I hadn't received any calls) and that "calls don't always go through from Mexico". Like...what? Isn't a basic expectation of this service that clients will be contacted about their pets from Mexico? If people are trusting you with their animals (even if they have passed) then communication mistakes like this should not be made.
Losing your dog unexpectedly is hard enough, but the disorganized and unprofessional handling of this situation made an awful situation even worse. Their communication lacked consistency and compassion and definitely has room for improvement. While this is a great concept, I would not use this service again because of the flaws I experienced with their...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreRecently my fur baby, a 3 year old cat named ZoĆ« became ill at a time in my life when Iām really struggling financially. I love her to death though and made an appointment for a local vet who referred me to an animal ER for an immediate exam. That ER wanted $1050 ~ $1600 just to diagnose her! I was devastated because there was no way I could afford that, not to mention treatment when they finally find the issue⦠after some tears I researched low cost vet services and found MexiVet Express and called them the next morning to see what they could do. By 2:00 PM she was in a van being transported to an affordable veterinary clinic in Tijuana, just to the south of us. Even though I mistakenly went to the wrong meeting place initially, the team at MexiVet Express got me on track and made the trip happen for me and ZoĆ«. Once across they arrived at the clinic I got a call from Nico, the transportation driver (and English-Spanish translator) who helped the Veterinary Physician ask me questions (and vice versa) to help him diagnose ZoĆ«. He was able to both complete the diagnostic tests recommend by the ER Vet, diagnose her issues and provide me with several medications, along with two 8.5 lb bags of prescription Hills cat food all for less than half the low-end estimated cost provided by the ER. When I broke it down and looked at the MexiVet Express costs vs the Vet ER costs⦠tests themselves cost me only only 26% of the low-end ER estimated cost and 18% of the upper-end estimate which the vet ER gave me⦠and thatās including transportation across and back over the border, where Nico had to sit through hours of border crossing traffic. I feel I got top notch veterinary care as well. I was provided with thorough and complete test results (a printout of the blood work with all the readings and a CD containing the X-ray images they took of her). Though I didnāt think to ask for these, I found comfort in the fact that they provided them anyway as a form a verification that the tests were indeed performed. Also provided was a summary of the Vetās interpretation of the results, and instructions on administering each medication and what each was for. The whole experience was fantastic. Not only were they very good and quick communicators, they also responded quickly to my request and acted quickly in order to save the life of my poor sick cat. I could not have been happier with the service I received, not to mention the extreme value provided for the services they facilitated for me and my ZoĆ«. Needless to say they will be having a customer for life now! ZoĆ« is already on the mend and starting to recover thanks to MexiVet Express. Iāll definitely be following up with them in a couple months as recommended, and theyāll be the first ones I call should ZoĆ« need any further veterinary care. I really canāt thank all the people at MexiVet Express as well as the Vet down over the border for helping my cat out enough. Thank you...
