I am the COO at Wellness Retreat Recovery Center, a luxury inpatient addiction treatment program in San Jose. Mark's collection of sober living homes is always at the top of my SLE referral list primarily because Mark's homes are TRUE sober living environments- a result of the close monitoring by the house managers in each of Mark's homes. Way too many SLE's become havens for relapsed clients. This endangers every other resident by increasing the chance for relapse due to substance exposure. The whole purpose of residing in an SLE is to minimize relapse risk by controlling exposure in the "home " environment. Many other SLEs allow relapsed/relapsing clients to remain in the home if the "offender" pays a certain fee or sleeps elsewhere for a couple of days (at which time they're welcome to come back). Mark's houses are different- mark does the "right thing" by referring the relapsing resident to a more secure, higher level of care. This minimizes risk for the other residents and also allows the relapsing client to receive the more intensive care they unquestionably need if they're relapsing. Additionally, Mark's homes are certified through the state. This certification is optional - SLE's don't require state cert and the vast majority operate without any state oversight- and speaks to Mark's dedication to his clients'...
Read moreI have several friends that have stayed at Second Chance, and I am very grateful there are supportive SLE's like this in the Bay Area. There is a structure and accountability involved with Second Chance that many other THU's (transitional housing units) and SLE's don't have. The house managers/assistant house managers that care and take time with house mates helps build compassion and trust with people that have forgotten what that feels like. House meetings for support, chores to build unity and responsibility, sobriety accountability; these are foundations to a lasting recovery and hard to develop living on your own in the early stages of recovery! I work in the field of addiction/recovery, and I wish all people had the knowledge and resources to access a safe and sober living environment like Second Chance provides. Second Chance, while it doesn't come at a cheap price, provides a strong foundation that can help the addict and/or alcoholic in early sobriety. Every little bit of insurance against relapse is an investment I encourage people to make. It really is an investment in your life and worth...
Read moreI have never lived at Second Chance, but I have worked closely as a mentor/sponsor with several residents of the SLE. Second Chance Sobriety Homes are run with the utmost integrity and professionalism. Unlike other SLE's, the residents of SCSH's are part of a tight knit community of support. Transitioning from a life of addiction to a life of recovery is a tumultuous journey. The owner of Second Chance and the house managers that are employed by the organization take recovery seriously and offer unwavering support to residents. Anyone who has ever tried to recover from addiction knows that it is not something that can be done alone -- a community of like minded and like hearted individuals is required. Second Chance understands this facet of recovery and works diligently to create a home-like environment where lives can transform through community, encouragement, guidance...
