Updated The Chief Operations Officer contacted me and rectified this situation by issuing a refund. Her genuine apology went a long way as she corrected what should have never happened. I absolutely appreciate that she took the time to read my review/experience and send her condolences. While I wish it never happened, I do hope that it serves as a learning experience for those involved. Thank you THRC, Chesley especially, for making things right.
The facility is really nice. They have all you need and then some. The price is high in comparison to other gyms in the area. not ideal for a college town, but was affordable for me personally and they have a lot to offer. I went to TXST full time and interned at a south Austin hospital full time, leaving me with 12+ hour days and much needed time to myself at a gym afterwards.
They offer you 2 free personal training sessions and I didnāt use mine, so when I ran into Nick (who was by far the nicest person at THRC) in October 2018, he helped me get scheduled to use them.
Personal training wasnāt something I was interested in past the free sessions, because I would likely, but not certainly, be leaving town soon and I expressed this to the trainer. She told me we could schedule it and have me sign the waiver for agreeing that if Iām hurt, it is no fault other than my own and then if I canāt go through with it, sheāll just remove me from the schedule.
Within the next 2 days, I confirmed that it wouldnāt be happening (through text to the PT) because my brother was going to need me in Houston to help take care of our sick mother and start making difficult decisions as her health was declining.
The PT responded with her apologies and understanding. About a week later, I was in Houston and realized that my stay would be longer than expected so I called to cancel my membership entirely because funds were going to get tight. I had to quit my job in Austin and still manage to pay rent for my lease in San Marcos, while also scraping money together for hospice expenses, momās rent and bills, etc. so I started searching for someone to sublease and needed to cancel anything extra. Meanwhile, THRC was playing phone tag with me, because there was never a manager available to help me. I finally spoke to Dave who told me I couldnāt cancel in the middle of personal training. I told him I wasnāt doing personal training, I did 2 free sessions and then left town shortly after. He told me I was contracted to them for a year for it and that to end it I would have to find someone else to take over my contract. To my knowledge, I never signed a contract. I signed a waiver.
By December 4th, I was charged 521.XX and played phone tag wth them again. I was told no refunds could be made and that my membership still couldnāt be canceled. I was told to email a nameless operations manager.
After a few emails of sending proof that I was in Houston, paying bills to a Houston address, my membership was canceled, but I was not returned any money. My rent was due the same day and I was overdrafted at this point. No help given and I explained my situation to them besides being wrongfully charged as well.
I finally made a claim dispute and after a month, lost it. After speaking to the bank again, I was told they had an electronic signature approving my contract for PT although I didnāt attend any sessions, havenāt been shown a contract myself after asking for it and not to mention didnāt physically sign anything, much less an...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreLet me first start by sharing the catalyst that helped me find this life saving gym.
In 2016, after 24 years of marriage I found myself going through a divorce and having not ever lived on my own until then and managing things I've never managed before, it was quite overwhelming. š
Life was overwhelming having to go to work, perform at work, and then come home and quietly deal with life.
It was EVERYTHING to get up each day and function. Sure, I'd go walking, just because I had nothing else to do and walking helped burn off frustrations and stress. I found myself walking a lot last year. š
I changed jobs in the fall of 2016 because I couldn't give my job what it really needed and my heart wasn't in it and to simplify my life I changed jobs to direct patient care at a hospital.
There, in time I met.a great gal pal Julie. Her boyfriend went to this gym (THRC) and she wanted to start going but didnt want to go by herself.... Well, in trying to get out of my comfort zone I told Julie I'd go with her. šš¼
So, we came to the gym and got a tour, talked with folks and shot the breeze for a while.....š
It was EXACTLY what my heart and soul needed..... More so than my body!šš
Everyone from the time you walk in the door to the time you leave all the staff greet you, assist you willingly and with genuine care and concern and where else can you find that???š
I was hooked and I went for it... I joined..... I joined a gym that isn't "just" a gym.... These folks are like an extension of friends and family, asking how you're doing, how your work out is going, suggesting tips and ways to work out smarter, better, different recipe ideas to get eating healthier.... They care for you here, not just your body, but connecting with you as a person, not as a number. š
This gym, this sanctuary of mine, came upon me at a time in my life when I needed salve for my soul and thats what this gym is to me..... Salve for the soul..... And it would be amazing for everyone to come to know this gem of a gym I have called home.š
The review below is my initial post, but I also.wanted to share a little more to really show the heart this gym has for truly helping people of any fitness level.without judging, without being self conscious.... This gym and everyone that goes there are truly accepting of everyone.... So we can all come as we are....š
What I sent to my personal trainer, Jake Woten:
THRC is by far the best of the best (with honors) co-ed gym I've ever tried to join, and even better than the all female gym I went to a million years ago.... The exciting part is the progress in the months to come and seeing where I'd started from, thats exciting....and I'll never forget When I paused for a moment and you (Jake) said " Jen, I'm committee if you are"... How could I say no to that? And so, life changes were born that dayš this gym has been rather therapeutic for me in ways I can't say but I'm forever grateful, so...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreBe cautious of the cancellation policy. The cancellation policy is unclear. From a few previous reviews regarding the cancellation policy, I see that it is a continuous issue.
I had initially called in to cancel my membership after the year contract was up. I had been receiving texts messages about my membership coming up to the year and that I would have to renew.
I understand that there is a cancellation policy in place, so when I reached out to THRC downtown to let them know I wouldnāt be renewing my policy, I assumed that would be the end of that. I was not told of an email method, and because of what I understood about the cancellation policy is that you would be charged for the month you cancelled, which I was okay with. My membership was for July, I reached out in August. I understand being charged for August.
I had noticed an additional charge on my bank statements for November, to which I had called in again immediately and then was told about the email to cancel. I then had emailed to explain my situation.
The cancellation was put in place immediately, which I appreciate. Iām going to assume that this is (hopefully) not going to charge me for December, since the charge for November went out the day I called?
I received the cancellation notice through email, and I see on the cancellation policy it does not mention an email method. It does, however, mention to cancel in person or via letter. When I called in, I was not instructed anything of the such so I thought I was done.
Itās a shame that this seems to be an ongoing process, and it is showing that the cancellation process is hard to get to. Even online or through the THRC app there is no notice of how to cancel the membership through the membership portal. I am out 3 months worth (this does not include August) of money, which the membership for this place is a bit pricey compared to other gyms.
You can call in to get this information (as I did the second time) but it seems that this information is does not get mentioned every time. It looks like management is giving out the email on the reviews for people to reach out, so thereās a start. I just suggest making this clear in the cancellation policy with the email needing to address to cancel. If not on the website, at least on the app through the membership portal instead of the generic customer service email and number. The app does include the address and phone number to the location, but only from my experience can I say that it is useless information for cancellation.
I have nothing negative to say about the facility itself. The equipment was nice and clean. Other members are respectful and keep their noises...
