We've shopped at the Food Basket for several months several times per week. But after today's visit we will never go back. My husband and I came into the store to buy some water, beer and two bottles of white wine. We're both 45 years old. My husband put the liquor up on the counter and I pulled out my drivers license and credit card to pay. But then the checker asked my husband for his drivers license which he had forgotten to bring with him and the lady promptly refused to sell the liquor to us. She told us we could come back in and buy it as long as I picked the liquor off the shelf but because my husband had been the one who touched the liquor they couldn't sell it to us. Odd law. But Ok. So we left and then as we where walking back we decided that I may as well just go back in and buy what we wanted rather than have to go back later. It's clear the law is in place to stop peeps from buying liquor to underage teenagers. I went back in, picked out the liquor and went to the checker to pay for it. But I was refused. Confused I asked why and no one was willing to explain it to me. So I asked to speak with the manager. He was called but refused to leave his office to speak with me. He never showed his face. The two men working the checkers made little to no eye contact with me and no one was willing to even talk to me and explain what was happening. I wasn't drunk. I was of legal age. i had my license in hand and money in my pocket. My husband was clearly not an underage teen. I'm new to New Mexico. We've only been here for 7 months but this had never happened before, not at the food basket which we've gone at least twice per week and no where else either. So I just didn't understand what I had done wrong. Finally the man at my checker left and went to speak with the manager (still in his office) and once he got back he said that because we've been refused before I couldn't go back in a buy it. I tried to ask clarification questions and was cut off several times by 'That's the law. That's just the way it is' I finally was able to get the guy to ask my questions. 'Can we never buy liquor here again?' 'Can my husband not buy liquor here again?' What needs to happen? We both adults and law abiding citizens. I did have my dark brown long hair hanging down my back and I wore a tie-die dress maybe that what was so offensive? Not sure. Now I'm curious if that the law - that everyone that is with you has to have a drivers license - should we report the food basket for not abiding the laws all those other times we frequented the store? Oh and we did go to another store and had no problems. I understand laws. But I don't understand rude. Why not just be kind...
Read moreOn 01/23/22 I visited the Food Basket from arizona while visiting family. Unfortunately I lost my wallet in the Parking lot. I went inside to ask for the manager to see if he could review cctv TV to see if he could give me any hints where i lost it. I approached the liquor corral and asked the two ladies working to contact a manager. I had to inturrupt their full mouth conversation, and one turns to me and says, "what do you want" where I asked for the manager. Eventually I got him and he helped me. I called back the next day to ask of it possibly was returned and customer service asked who I needed to reach, i said customer service please, and the lady rudely asked thos is customer service, "what do you want?" Is this the store slogan What do you want? My family said thats why the locals call it the Trash Basket. I gave it a shot and they proved the nickname right. Terrible...
