One of the trademarks of a town is it's mall, and the Somerset mall has been around for a very long time, but you can't really call it a mall more so than a jc penny building with a few stores in it inconsistently. The arcade is riddled with games that come and go after a year or so of stealing money or just not functioning properly , the theater is base and nothing special anymore , and you can almost see the ghost of businesses long past in the blemishe rooms dust now occupy.
Now this
The one thing, the absolute most asinine thing I've seen about this mall however is the antique candy that has sat FOR OVER 14 YEARS. WHY? WHAT IS THIS? The candy has not been changed! It has been exactly the same since I started coming back and forth into this town when I was 12 years old and I've been told it's been there for even longer than that. Make note that if you pay close attention to the candy towards the bottom or the top it has not been replaced or refilled. So many people that I have spoken to about this have stories about them getting sick or breaking a tooth. You don't need to be connoisseur to be well aware immediately that the candy being sold and openly advertised on the little red cart is well outdated and awaiting a health inspector or family lawyer's grievances.
I love the people that work here especially in "show off shirts" where I've always experienced the absolute best treatment, fairness, and customer loyalty I've seen in any state or town I've been.
Over all my conclusion is that just like most of the town of Somerset mall is been left behind in history and not all of that is a bad thing, but with antique buildings and pristine customer service lies the biggest insult to any and all passerby , perhaps it's a running joke in the locals might enjoy seeing tourist and their children cringe in horror at the impression that the small dare made with its false treats. Maybe it's there for Nostalgia reasons, but I put off reviewing the Somerset mall for a long time and pondered upon it, every time I would revisit it was still there. THIS is the only thing that has stained my opinion so badly that I would highly recommend...
Read moreI'm sure there was a time when the Somerset Mall was in its prime but that time has clearly passed. Walking through this mall for the first time feels like I'm in the twilight zone. It seems like this mall hasn't changed a single thing since it's (probably) thriving days back in the 90s, minus all the space for rent signage in the empty storefront windows.
There are 2 department stores in the mall (Belk & JC Penney) and a few random little stores and literally that's it. The inside of the mall smells like old medical equipment and the hallway lighting seems off (too dim in spots). The area where a movie theater used to be sits eerily abandoned. They planted pothos throughout the halls but because they're getting no light they look stragley, leggy out of place like they've been growing their for 30 years and nobody has realized that they aren't happy. Normally in a mall I wouldn't think twice about the plants but mixed with everything else it just adds to the weird twilight zone vibes the malls giving off.
The other strange thing I noticed is the lack of a food court. What kind of mall doesn't have one? There's an Auntie Ann's and that is it.
I feel bad for Belk and JC Penney. The workers were so helpful and friendly when I was in JC Penney and I hope they continue to get business being in an outdated and mostly...
Read moreThe mall in Somerset has been a staple in the community for years. I grew up in Somerset and have visited the mall countless times throughout its time being opened.
I'm sad to say that malls (not just this one) across America are not what they used to be. This is a historic place with memories for everyone thst grew up in Pulaski County, and just like the other malls it is a dying art. The shops in the store have been there forever and the parking lot is not full. Which is not the owners of the malls fault, with the introduction of shopping online, a lot of people don't care about the mall experience. We had a movie theater in there as well, and it has since been closed, and then reopened and closed again, which is really sad as well, as movie theaters are also a dying art.
What I'm saying is, and the reason why I gave five stars is because I love the place, and the memories that I have in it, I wish someone could fix it up and make it better and bigger but that is easier...
