I’ve lived in The Colony, Texas for 10 years and have shopped at Dollar General many times, but I recently had the worst customer service experience I’ve ever encountered.
On Monday 9/22/25 , I went to the Dollar General in The Colony at 9:57 p.m. to quickly pick up a loaf of bread. The posted closing time is 10:00 p.m., so I expected to be able to shop. Instead, several employees were standing at the front of the store and told me they had already pulled the register drawer at 9:57. The doors were still open, yet they refused to allow me to check out.
What made this even more unacceptable is that the employees were simultaneously ringing up and bagging their own purchases right in front of me. This raises the question: if the register was supposedly counted down and closed, how were they able to process their own transactions while denying me service?
As a former General Manager of Dollar General, I know this is not company policy. Registers should remain open and operational until the posted closing time, and all customers who enter before closing should be served. By refusing service, these employees failed to honor the store’s hours, demonstrated poor judgment, and created a negative customer experience.
I urge you to address this issue with the staff at this location. Customers rely on posted store hours, and early shut-downs not only inconvenience shoppers but also damage trust in the Dollar General brand.technically the store is still open until 10:00. If a customer walks in at 9:59 and the register is already down, the store is not honoring the posted hours. What they did shows poor customer service. It’s not just about procedure—it’s about the customer’s experience. Refusing you service while the store is still open, yet ringing themselves up, sends the message that their convenience matters more than yours.
Employees standing at the door abd register while refusing customers before closing is unprofessional.
If drawers are already pulled, but employees are still ringing up personal purchases, that’s a compliance issue.
It goes against Dollar General’s official closing procedure, which requires honoring customers until the posted...
Read moreI live nearby so I've been a Dollar General customer since before they moved to this location. I've always loved the convenience of running in to get a missing item needed for dinner or some contact solution but every time I've been in there in the last 6 months it's been a shitshow.
Last time a lady that's a manager closed her checkout lane with a line at it to "Go grab those things for her mother". I was still standing in line when she had gotten done grabbing those things and joined me in line. This was a slightly better experience than my previous interaction with her.
The second to last time I went in there to get a specific item that they were out of so I grabbed a couple sodas anyway because I was thirsty. While I was standing in line I remembered that my kid asked for a 3 Musketeers and during the literally 5 seconds that it took to find and grab the candy bar this Dollar General Manager got in line ahead of me with 2 carts full of stuff that she needed to do several different transactions for with one register open and a line. During this transaction she also sent the cashier into the office to grab some baskets that she left in there. I know that she's the manager because when people in line behind me started complaining about the wait and asked for a manager she rudely told us she was the manager and that no one else was there.
Once her transaction was done and she was out the door it was finally my turn to buy my 2 items and then the card chip reader acted stupid and kept freezing up. Suddenly another employee materialized that came to help with the system freezing up so on top of everything else the manager lied to us about there not being anyone else there.
With management like that, is it a surprise that the stores gotten...
Read moreUpdate: what happened? Staff has changed big time. I went into Dollar General last night to pick up a few items. This is after I had just finished a 10 hour shift at the rehabilitation hospital where I work in Plano. The store was so HOT that I couldn't finish my shopping. I felt like I was close to fainting. I asked the cashier if their air conditioning has gone out. She said NO, but I couldn't believe what she told me next. She said that the corporate office was purposely controlling the temperature from another location and making them work in this heat. I'm sorry, but this is not China. why is this company allowed to do this. I felt bad because I can choose to leave and not shop there. But the employees having to work 8 hours in that heat is not right. Please if you read this and you're a customer at DG, call the health dept or the city of The Colony and voice this outrage. It is not right to have them working in the heat that I experienced last night. Why would a company want to do that to their employees... and their customers? DG makes enough money to pay an electric bill. geez. At this time, I am refusing to spend any more dollars with this company until the employees are able to work in some air conditioning. updated Oct10,2021 The people working there are very down to earth. Thanks Mr. Clay! Laura, Jabari and Stephan...
