While the mall still has some retailer tenants left the fact that Walmart, its biggest draw, moved out into North Lake County Indiana several years ago, has really hurt the profit margin & popularity rate of this mall that was once a bustling mall.
Remaining retailers as if Winter, 2016: Fed Ex/Kinkos, Ultra Foods grocery, a dollar store, a wig store, Subway, Burger King, a bank express branch, and a few other businesses. But none that have the appeal that Walmart holds.
Sadly, this may mean future blight for this mall if mall management doesn't act fast and take several maneuvers.
Maneuvers such as sprucing up the parking lot by adding landscaping (several grassy rectangular islands with trees, mini bushes, flowers and benches for those waiting on shoppers to return to a vehicle versus in-vehicle while idling adding to airborne toxins from automobile exhaust). Sprucing up storefronts to add more cohesive 'curb-appeal' as if a neighborhood street with storefront sidewalks and sidewalk lamp posts. Such ideas will surely garner more appeal to passerby traffic.
Facing & being parallel to a high-traffic street, Torrance Blvd. it would be wise for mall management to implement the above strategies to draw more consumers before the Auditors co.e in and tell them to shut down and file for bankruptcy as many of Americas oldest existing malls where forced to do.
It would also behoove mall management to seek new high-quality retailers such as Starbucks, Panera Bread or Whole Foods Market as a more stable consumer draw.
So if anyone from mall management ever reads this I pray next trip I return to my beloved hometown that you will have tried to implement at least a portion of these ideas. Especially as the entire Calumet City and neighboring suburban residents will surely appreciate.
P.S.: Ultra Foods nice management needs to put some serious effort into sprucing up their...
