In 2023 where you can download games without ever leaving your home, I’m not ready to make that switch yet… Physical copies all the way. Probably because I’ve been playing video games for 35 years since I was 4 and yes, out of habit, I still blow into the NES cartridges, even though the Internet eventually threw that out the window. What 10-year-old kid is going to use isopropyl alcohol and a Q-tip? Who has time for that when there was no pause option in Mortal Kombat?!
Thanks to a lucky Google search, I found an amazing store known as Retro Source. From the moment I called and spoke to Will - an upbeat and friendly gentleman who put my mind at ease to let me know Zelda tears of the Kingdom was in stock, and he will hold one for me (I didn’t reserve oops), to the moment I walked out of this blast-from-the-80s-past wonder store - the experience was fantastic.
Adorned across the walls are 80s decals, a CRT playing the Q-Bert TV show I didn’t even know existed, action figures from my childhood, old and new consoles tested and ready for purchase at fair prices, amongst other great finds. I even picked up a pixelart shadowbox of Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails fighting Dr. Robotic which I already have hung up on my office wall.
You will not be disappointed if you visit the store! Please continue to help out all brick and mortar shops everywhere, starting here at retro source!...
Read moreOut of all the game/hobby stores I’ve seen on the island, this one’s strikes me majorly different. The amount of love and thought I see in the appearance of the store is huge. Their collection of games, while more select then say some other stores, seemed somewhat curated and at least had what I was looking for. The (store owner I believe?) was even so nice that he recommended me a pretty niche game he had in stock just because he thought I’d like it based off of the banter we had while playing the arcade fighting cabinets they had set up. Which brings me to my favorite highlight of the place. THE ARCADE CABINETS. These were all authentic, with I think touch ups to the sticks and buttons to refurbish them but god, The selection here was great. If you want to talk about a curated selection, they had basically every fighting game cabinet you could ask for all the while feeling completely new. They had the greats like tekken 3, street fighter 2 and third strike and my very favorite, Marvel vs Capcom 2 among other great cabinets. These are the real deal so be sure to bring some quarters and if ya just got cash, they got a change machine on-site.
Overall I love this place and plan on visiting more. Please bring everyone you know that you think would be interested in playing some classic arcade cabinets and could grab a game to...
Read moreThis place is absolutely amazing! Not only are the vibes immaculate, but the staff are all very knowledgeable and friendly as well!
I had the pleasure of finding this place while looking for somewhere to sell my Switch other than Gamestop. When my friend and I arrived, staff greeted us and invited us to take a look around the store, and also gave us quarters to play some arcade games while we were browsing!
They are more than fair with their trade-in prices for both in-store credit or cash. And the prices on things you buy there are excellent as well! I was lucky enough to find a sealed Black Ops 1 Collectors Edition which brings me 1 step closer to having all of the collectors editions for the Black Ops franchise, as well as an awesome Thundercats figure for my Dad's Father's day gift.
Maybe a week or 2 later, I found an old backwards compatible PS3 while cleaning out some old offices, and brought that alongside some games and got more than I was expecting for that trade-in as well!
Please come out and support local businesses like these, because they are truly amazing, and are a dying breed sadly.
TLDR; Great Prices, Friendly Staff, Good Finds, and More than fair...
