What a beautiful location! The lobby is so colorful and welcoming. The staff is incredibly friendly! The rooms are beautiful, and the nurses go above and beyond!

I will sum this entire story up in one sentence so you do not have to read it: HELL ON EARTH. Upon entering the facility after a domestic dispute with my family i had noticed that the facility was extremely small.

The first day that i was there, I was threatened by a janitor.

The second day, i was simply walking around, trying to keep my brain healthy due to the fact that this mental institute is EXTREMLY SMALL.

There are 8 beds in 1 room, and sometimes they can squeeze up to 11 people into one room, with the beds touching eachother.

They have 1 room for all the adults, besides the sedation room, which i will get into in a moment.

This is one of the most traumatic experiences that i have ever had in my entire life, being in this mental hospital.

I kept asking why i was there, when the two female doctors came to interview me, and they really had no idea why i was there, or why i was being held there ( granted I knew it was from a domestic dispute)

I was walking around, this extremely small facility, the entire size of the facility is smaller than the smallest apartment that you can think of. I was trying to keep my brain healthy, due to the fact that this place, even upon entering, is traumatizing to the mind. So yea, after walking around for a little bit, and doing some exercises like jogging in place, or doing situps or pushups, They decided that i was "out of control" and "needed to be sedated" Prior to this point the janitor (who happened to be black) started threatening me under his breath as he walked past me. I told him to bugger off, So he went into the staff room, and began giving me the middle finger behind the glass.

The other staff members were telling me not to be provoked by him.

Anyways, back to me being sedated for no reason whatsoever, They told me they can strap me down and inject me or I can take the cocktail of pills they were given me. I asked them "You guys know what you are doing is wrong right?" and they just gave me a blank stare, basically acknowleding that what they were doing in this facility was completely backwards for any patients mental health

If you plan to go here and have real mental issues, you will receive NO HELP for them.

The staff basically stays out of the general populus area except when the 2 female doctors come around.

There are 8 to 11 beds in 1 room.

I assume that the Juvenile room was a little bit bigger, as they had a TV and couches (as i could see through the window and the door) however, the adult area, was tiny, it was so tiny.. it was the size of the smallest apartment that i can think of.

So if you're coming here for mental health issues of your own accord. STOP RIGHT NOW. go somewhere else such as the Greenport ELIH or Mather hospital.

Both are 1000% better than this hole in the wall.

I can't write my disdain enough about my 3 day stay at this facility in which i am still traumatized about to this day. I feel bad for ANYONE that enters this facility wether they enter it for mental health issues or they enter it for something else such as what happened to me with a domestic dispute .

I was around 25 years old when i entered this facility. They treated me as if I was an inmate at a prison, if not worse.

The food is absolutely horrendously horrible, as well.

The only place to sit down was on these metal barred chairs that are bolted to the floor, none of which faces the TV that is encased in broken plexiglass.

This facility needs to be looked into immediately, and i wish i had wrote about this sooner, but i just found out that you can write reviews

Long story short: Never take anyone here if you're looking for real care and treatment. This is basically an in between where they send people when all the other facilities are busy or full.

This is my warning to anyone who attends Stony Brook Mental Institution .

Edit: I forgot to mention, on one day while i was there, they had 4 guys sharing 2 beds (1...

I've delivered both my babies there and both experiences were the worst. The experience with my first daughter, the nurses were very rude, so were the doctors. I'm hard of hearing and there were no interpreter provided and they were upset that I couldn't hear. The experience with my second daughter, was a NIGHTMARE. I will never forget. She passed away there, she was only 2 weeks old! She was born with Hirschsprung Disease (unable to poop, swollen belly, loss of blood, etc). The only way to treat it was surgery. She had her first surgery and the doctors and nurse were telling me that recovery was normal and amazing; her fever, little swollen belly, no pooping - was ALL NORMAL because she just got out of surgery. I knew something wasn't right and I tried telling the doctors and nurse, no one listed to me. Again, "everything is normal". They started realizing at the LAST MINUTE that she wasn't doing so well, wanted to do a 2nd operation on her. I told them I refused to because she just had her surgery a week before and they want to do another one?! They forced me to sign the papers to get her to get a second operation. So, 12 hours after her second operation, she passed away! Worst experience ever! I will not take my first daughter there because of what happened to my second one. I would rather drive to Nassau than Stony Brook.

My boyfriend even went there to get his shoulder checked out, the doctors were REALLY rude and did a horrible job on him. My boyfriend actually left the hospital with a STEROID medicine! Never again. My boyfriend went to see a chiropractor and orthopedic (orthopedic from BrookHaven), they found out what was wrong with him and he would have been paralyzed!

PLEASE IF YOU BRING YOUR CHILD HERE, THINK LIKE A DOCTOR AND BE LIKE A DOCTOR. DONT LET THOSE PEOPLE FOOL YOU AND DO A HORRIBLE JOB ON YOUR CHILD! ESPECIALLY YOURSELF!

Stony Brook used to be a good hospital. I have many friends who had a horrible...

WORST HOSPITAL EVER. do not ever stay here. So basically i caught c diff due to being on antibiotics and i was extremely sick severe stomach pains, nonstop vomiting, and Bloodly Diarrhea. So I was taken to Stonybrook university hospital and the staff here is very rude and uncaring one horrible doctor actually accused me of making this up and accusing me of just wanting to be in the hospital like are you actually serious how do you make up nonstop vomiting and bloodly diarrhea they actually even tried to send me home but i refused to let them send me home so they admitted me and my nurse and nursing aide were both very rude people and my nurse actually shouted at me for throwing up my pills cause i was sick and she actually said this to me "you clearly ate something you weren't supposed to (i have celiacs) and that's why you're sick right now" even though i didn't eat anything containing gluten and me having c diff hadn othing to do with the celiacs and i actually saw her later in the halls talking bad about other patients also Stonybrook has the worst gastro doctors ever. they absolutely do not care about patients they are completely helpful and talking to them is like talking to robots and the gastros actually forced me to leave even though i was still just as sick when i came in here and i even refused to leave but they still forced me to leave. I went to LIJ right afterwards and got treated with 100x nicer and more caring staff. Do not stay at stonybrook whatsoever because the staff is all rude and uncaring individuals who do not care for...
