Honestly some of these reviews make me laugh. I am a commuter student but I eat on campus daily. I've been in dining enough to know if the dining halls are dirty it's because students go in and make a mess (spills, food on table, floors, broken plates, utensils on floors etc) Every few minutes you see the staff cleaning up that stuff. And generally the dining is pretty clean. There are 2 dining options (East & West). East also has 6 retail options, Jasmine 5, Roth 3, GLS 1. There is also the SAC. If you are tired of the food in one location you can literally go to the next. You are not forced to eat at the same place everyday. Each food location is unique. For about $10. per meal that's good. It's not the ritz but I can say the food is better than a lot of places on the island and I can't name one university with better and a larger variety of meal options for students. It caters for Caribbean, Jewish, halal, Chinese, Korean, Indian, Mexican, American and Greek cuisines.
I once had a convo with one of the chefs in Island soul about the spices as the food didn't seem as spicy as it should. He told me when you're cooking for a university not all students can handle all that spice so the food in general is tailored so that everyone can enjoy. If you need more spice you can add it to your specification.
The only critique of dining I have is the prices (Halaal is too high, higher than average) and the East Side Dining Late night sucks, avoid. If you are eating late go to West. But, in general if you're dining is that bad it's because of you. That's like going to Burger king everyday and getting upset that everyday day the menu is the same. Get outta...
Read moreI am a non traditional returning student and I have to say that some of these posts knocking the quality of the food or the cleanliness of the dining areas are just ridiculous. Also the students complaining about the prices apparently have never eaten food in a restaurant before at least not where they were paying because I challenge you to get lunch which includes an entree, drink, and a snack for after for less than the $13 avg it has cost me to do so on campus. Sure the food is not five star dining but who expects it to be. All of the variety of locations I have eaten in have been tasty. Maybe if you are looking for insta worthy meals...
Read moreEgregiously bad, both food and service. Prices are at about a 400 percent markup because Stony Brook is 35 million in debt. Not worth the money at all. Dining areas as usually filthy and some of the staff are nasty. I've never seen the kitchens where the food is actually prepared but I wouldn't be surprised if there were board of health violations as there have been cases of people becoming sick from the food.
Update: This semster, a lot of the food is coming out RAW. I've seen raw chicken several times in East side dining. This is not only disgusting but potentially very dangerous. Some of my friends have even...
