UPDATE: Since posting this review on my fb page, THREE other cyclist friends of mine reached out to me saying that they had the identical problem. So, this is a not uncommon problem. āāāāāāāāāā-
I have a bespoke old school steel Waterford (think Schwinn Paramount: the owner of Waterford, based in Waterford Wisconsin, is the great grandson of Schwinn), Campy down that I had built for me in 2009 so that I could pretend that I was 25 and not the 55 that I was and take a stab at doing one stage of the Tour de France (known as the Le Etape de Tour).
This late summer, it developed a problem where it would make this horrible grinding sound while coasting downhill as I applied pressure on the right pedal, on a random and intermittent basis.
These guys said that because it is intermittent, they wonāt be able to figure it out, and because it is an āold bikeā (16 year old steel frame that visually is in mint condition and other than this problem is in perfect mechanical condition?) they canāt get parts from their suppliers (even though I can find any part on eBay), therefore they canāt fix it even if they figured it out.
This, after waiting a week for them to get back to me.
I lived in nyc for 45 years. I called the shop in lower Manhattan that fitted me for the bike and built it up. I was able to speak to the owner immediately. He asked if the wheels were Mavic. I said yes. He said that I have a well known and well understood problem, that the Mavic hubs of 15 years ago, once they have more than x amount of thousands of miles on them, develop an issue with the bearings and make that noise when coasting at high speeds.
He said that the Mavic company has been sold three times since then, and getting the parts therefore isnāt the easiest thing to do, but it is doable and he often even has some lying around in his shop because he sees the problem a few times a year and tries to keep them on hand. He said he will take a look around, to cāmon down, he will take care of me!!!
Bryanās Bikes is either not very knowledgeable, or they are just lazy and canāt be bothered, but they are not the only ones. Iāve been to three shops now in the Hudson Valley who couldnāt deal with this. The Hudson Valley needs more knowledgeable bike mechanics with a little bit more of a can-do spirit.
So, off to Manhattan I go! Maybe if I get there early enough, and if they can fix it quickly enough, I can go out to Prospect Park for 10 laps, like the good old days, heart...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIām a novice mountain biker and my boyfriend is a beginner-intermediate. We made the trek (pun intended) to this bike shop from NJ because it was one of the few shops that had a Trek Roscoe 7 in my size left, and we both felt it was 1000% worth the trip afterwards.
Frank helped us from start to finish, and was excellent with everything. He appears to be extremely knowledgeable in bike fittings, and gets bonus points from this physical therapist for including a model of a pelvis in his explanations of sitting positions.
These guys also donāt seem like they push anything just to make a sale - Frank actually told me I DIDNāT need flashy orange grips on my handles, and his reverse psychology worked because I bought them anyways.
10/10 recommend these guys for any and...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreMy visit to Brian's bike shop was not good. As me and my family enter the store. We got a uncomfortable vibe. Felt like we were distributing him. Also got the impression that our kind was not welcome there.. meaning African-American. Also felt he treated us like we didn't have the the finance to afford his bikes. All the things that's going on in this world at this moment you will think that people will be a little bit more compassionate towards people . He needs to take a page out of my book never judge a book by its cover open that book first and and...
