Stop & Shop — Local services in Town of Hempstead

I ran into the Stop & Shop in Baldwin to pick up a few items. Some fresh fruit and a couple ingredients needed for my dinner. The produce section is right at the front entrance so I headed to the strawberries first. There were 2 sections. One at the end-cap and the other is in the actual isle. I went to the end-cap first. I was IMMEDIATELY FLOORED at what I saw. Every single carton of strawberries was filled with severely molded strawberries. White fuzz visibly growing and spreading across the berries. Carton after carton after carton. MOLD. I looked up to see if there was an employee in the department so I could bring this to their attention. I saw a produce employee walking down the aisle, passing the other section of berries. I got his attention and showed him the disgusting fruit. He proceeded to explain to me that the other produce employees were at fault and went to the back to bring out fresher strawberries. As he was gone, I decided to check out the other section of strawberries. This section had quite a few more cartons and YET AGAIN…all the cartons had white and green fuzzy mold growing amongst the strawberries. Again, I brought these to his attention and needless to say, I no longer wanted any strawberries. I went to the grapes instead. Yes, as I approached the cartons of grapes…I saw flies. My heart sank as I looked at the cartons of grapes. They looked “murkey”. I couldn’t believe it. There was even MORE mold on the grapes!!!! I took several pictures and got sick to my stomach. HOW COULD A HIGH TRAFFIC SUPERMARKET ALLOW THIS ON THE SALES FLOOR?! $7.99 for grapes in this economy and they’re covered with MOLD that can definitely make someone extremely ILL. My heart breaks for the elderly and people with poor vision that shopped at Stop & Shop in Baldwin and purchased any of these produce items. This is completely unacceptable and disgraceful! I did bring this to the attention of the store manager, who seemed appreciative of the fact that I shared the info with him. He explained that the employees didn’t “rotate the fruit properly”, then went straight to produce to fix it.This is why I gave the rating 2 stars instead of 1. I did not look at any more produce so I don’t know what else was molded and expired but I wanted to share this with anyone looking to purchase produce from Stop & Shop in Baldwin…INSPECT YOUR PRODUCE because they obviously don’t!

UPDATE: I received a call back from Eileen, the Cust. Service Manager. She was very kind and understanding of the importance of having fresh produce on the sales floor. I appreciate her attentiveness to my concerns. I am hopeful that Stop & Shop in Baldwin...

My visit to Stop &Shop was less than stellar to put it mildly.... A store full of people doing there Saturday afternoon shopping, and there’s 3 registers open... The so called Self Checkout is a joke as well. Constantly breaking down, people waiting to have an employee come over to help them, a total waste of time! Here we have an employee standing around doing nothing but monitoring the self checkout. This person could be on the register right next to the self checkout helping people get the heck out of there...

And then we have the Covid-19 lines!! I understand the need for them, but HOW ABOUT LETTING PEOPLE WHERE THEY ARE? I’m standing at register 11 waiting for the person in front of me to finish up. Not realizing there is a line half a mile long in isle 10 waiting to checkout at isle 11 as well!

The employees here seem lackadaisical, and unwilling to help at all, not the kind of attitude I need when I’m having a problem at the self checkout! As for the prices? There nothing special, in fact I’d say there a bit on the pricey side. Selection of meats has always been a joke here. 4 of 5 pieces of meat, chicken and pork,,,, THATS ABOUT IT! Fortunately, I only go in there very infrequently and when I absolutely need something I can’t get elsewhere at the time. After today, I really don’t think I’ll be going back there at all! When Stop & Shop first opened there doors, they were great! Now after some time and being established in the area...... They have become just as bad as Waldbaums that...

Only go here as it's a convenient location at times. I have driven out of my way to go to other locations. The store was filthy the staff are extremely rude and disrespectful. The staff will stand around seeing a crowd and long lines and won't assist customers or their colleagues. One heavy set young man with black hair and eyeglasses who is normally on self checkout area always treats me and others as if we're stealing and once he allowed customers to go out the entrance near self checkout and I was 1-2 minutes right behind them as I allowed him to do this and then he made me walk out front entrance it was 2 minutes before the time of door supposed to be locked. Management is never visible or around. One time my cashier needed assistance the manager finally came and vented about the job was loud rude and obnoxious. I called her out on her not be professional she argued with me until I left the store. They need to revamp the entire staff or close this location. Let Lidl or...
