It started off at great experience. I was looking at a 2004 Pontiac GTO. Looked CLEAN. I test drove it and everything seemed to be going well. I bought the car, part of the deal was that it was be delivered to me in an enclosed trailer on a certain day. That day passed and it was days before car arrived, on a flatbed trailer exposed to road salt....then I put car in my garage to get through winter. A couple weeks later I went to fire it up, pull out of garage on a nice day and check it out some more. The clutch was messed up big time. I held clutch and brake and as I turned the key to start it the car it lunged forward and went flying out of the garage, keep it mind I know how to drive stick. The clutch and brake was ALL THE WAY DOWN while this happened. I got garage paint rubbed off on my door. I contacted Chris Schafer who sold me car. He was great and sent car back to transmission shop to get it fixed free of charge. I was happy with this but I did ask for service records to be given to me so I could have them for future reference. Chris also told me car just had “brand new clutch” installed before I bought it. Then later said it was “rebuilt”. This sketched me out but I had already bought car so I had to try and trust them.. I asked 4 times for service records and everytime he said “yeah I’ll get them to you” and never did. I gave up trying. Car is also rusty underneath I think they sprayed it with undercoat over the rust which is bad news. Car came with 0 service records. Buying the car was easy. The rest was bad. Took long enough to get car. Was promised on a couple occasions that car would arrive on a certain day then it didn’t. I would contact Chris with no response. Great Lakes has some awesome cars. Just be very thorough when looking for rust that was my mistake. I have a feeling I got one of the only cars with problems. Their other cars looked mint but not in my budget. Also other reviews show great experiences and I probably happened to be one of the few to have a bad experience. Chris told me Great Lakes is all about their reputation and that they are not like typical car salesman, they want the customer happy, which does seem to be good, but I think i got a raw deal here. If They were truly being honest with me about car they would have told me it was rusty. Pictures online did not show how bad rust was. Keep that in mind and I hope you have a...
Read moreI'm very pleased to write a review on my experience with Great Lakes Classic Cars in Hilton, NY. Engels and the rest of the staff there are very warm and compassionate in servicing their clients. At first , I was looking for a '55 Chevy but after 2 years of searching for the right one , I realized that what I wanted wasn't going to happen. Both David and Engels had me look over their inventory and I test drove a few cars from their lot. Nothing seemed to strike me …...I wanted a car in the '50's or '60's and one that wowed me and other people when they saw me coming down the road. Engels was very patient and wanted to make me happy with a car that I bought . Then he showed me a '71 Oldsmobile 442 . Red exterior , black vinyl with bucket seats in the front. And I had the biggest smile on my face. And in turn, Engels was happy to see me happy. The car needed a few minor fixes and one major fix. He paid for all of them and never charged me a cent !!! He also said that I'm family and if I need anything ever , just call him. I assure you he wants to treat ALL of his customers that way. He wants to please and have a customer return again once they buy from...
Read moreWe were shopping for a new family car, not a classic car when we stumbled along an SUV Great Lakes Classic Cars was selling through an internet search. We called about it, someone answered right away, a real person! They told us what information they knew, told us they would get it out and ready for a test drive and get the details. We stopped in the next day with the car running out front. Were met at the door, super friendly chat, test drive and discussion. There was no pressure. They were honest and helpful. Fully understood and supported us going to our personal credit union for financing and when we return with financing in place got all paperwork and vehicle ready in less than 24 hours. We never felt had, pressured, or rushed. All questions were met with answers and action taken. It was the most comfortable car buying experience my husband and I have ever had. We would definitely contact Engalls and Dave again in a heartbeat for another car purchase. It was also nice to be able to purchase from a smaller local dealer not the big box...
