This is one of my favorite local plazas, mostly because it houses Bits'n'pieces, the tool-reuse store and the library and the little shop with the delicious perogies.
Accessibility: Handicapped parking is very limited at the upper level, only about half are marked "legally" with sign and paint, although most able parkers are respectful. There are also minimal curb depressions adding lots of extra steps for those who ambulate, poorly, on step ups or downs.
I was also told there is an underground parking center, but I have never tried it. I asked questions. I was told the entire way between the underground garage and library is either flat or graded. Seems more reasonable for a chair user than a person with a hard limit on steps. I think the underground lot makes the above ground parking lot hotter than Hades on a sunny day. If you have temperature intolerance, plan accordingly.
The Library is the closest available bathroom, there is an elevator that goes down to the library entrance. It is slow, but reliable. There is also street level access to Main street thru the library.
[Sadly, it is also one of those lots that get you lots of disdainful looks for using a handicapped parking tag. I have even been sworn at by ol'blue hairs. I also catch side-eye disdain for using the elevator to the library. This is one abilist town and I wouldn't mention it if it didn't happen EVERY time I went to the plaza which is frequently. This is a human issue so differently-abled people prepare your armor and...
Read moreThis is such a nice part of town. The fact that there's actually underground parking is so cool in such a little village. Composition of stores is wonderful. I visit just about every single business, from one end to the other. There's also The Weeknd Farmers Market when in season and a great set of on-site exhibits during canal days. This area is one of the great contributions to making Fairport so livable: plenty of super conveniently located free parking. They've even added charging stations near the west end. The one thing that really bothers me though is the missing letter a in the word Village on the northward facing large square one story "Fairport Village Landing" sign on Main Street. This bothers me because 30 years ago I found that wooden letter "A" on the ground and, to my everlasting shame, mistakenly took it across the street to the town hall (thinking, not completely ignorantly, that the government owns everything, or at least absolutely believes they should) where some guy put it in his desk -- never to be seen again. Someday I'm going to cut one on a table saw and glue it up there myself. It bugs me every time I drive by, which at is approaching ten thousand times since that day. Hmm, given that I haven't already been actually motivated for a DIY, will I actually ever be...
Read moreThere aren't that many things here, BUT there are several things that are noteworthy Craft Bits n Pieces. A "Goodwill" for artists and crafters. You can shop, and you can donate your unwanted art and craft supplies. This place is a treasure. They have yarn, knitting needles & crochet hooks, patterns, fabric and notions, buttons, thread, embroidery supplies, paper, cardboard, miscellaneous art supplies (I have found oil colors, tube watercolors, easels, GOOD brushes, frames). But like all such places, it's hit and miss. Tool Thrift Shop. Again, amazing. Used tools, including garden tools, nails, screws, bolts, electrical, plumbing, power tools, hand tools, vintage tools. Anything Goes: A consignment shop, mostly women's clothing. Very nice stuff. Prices are pretty reasonable. They must be pretty picky about what they take. Red Bird Market. A local small grocer with many unique and locally supplied goods. A great place to check out. Fairport Library Dollar Store
And the Fairport farmer's market on...
