As a card-carrying urbanist just passing through for trucking work, seeing a sign slapped on a building that says "supermarket" in a sleepy town like Roscoe is a tall order for what the interior contents should be. But, I was pleasantly surprised inside at how much was available. Some people mentioned "bodega," but I think this place is about twice the size of your average Boston or NYC bodega. Does that warrant the moniker "super"--well I guess in the literal sense it is therefore a SUPER... bodega market.
I don't know how [okay, I know how--morbid curiosity] but I wound up on the end of one aisle in which they sell women's jackets, blinged-out leggings and... fishnet tights?! Like, packs and packs of them. I mean, pardon my city-slicking eyes and brain--I get the jackets and leggings... but are there REALLY the kind of women in the area who are INTO wearing those things these days? Or does this area ATTRACT those kind of female travelers to the area (or maybe guys--gotta be fair--it's 2021!). Did I mention the blinged-out leggings? I was trying to see if they had ANYTHING for guys, but nope, just packs and packs of blinged-out leggings--at least eight different varieties--and said fishnet tights! In a grocery store--er super bodega market--in rural Upstate New York.
Moving on... they had bungee cords, which most grocery stores, even larger, dare I say, SUPER markets, don't have, so those actually came in handy because apparently mine broke on the way up. Standard dry foods and a whole wall of frozen dinners and cold drinks, plus apparently some fresh meats. Lastly, a small sandwich-making station up front near the cashier. I'm not knocking that until I try it (maybe next time) because I actually had decent bagel-egg-bacon breakfast sandwiches at a gas station mini-deli a few years ago in some other rural sleepy town (I know, redundant) in Upstate New York. This particular time I trusted my hot food choices to Kasos a few...
Read moreBe careful shopping here. Not only was everything over priced. But everything last thing that we picked up was expired or about to be expired. I have never seen gray beef hotdogs before. I’m pretty confident that the store owner is aware, because all the expired stuff is towards the front of the shelf, you literally have to dig in the back to find anything that is not out of date. After further debate we decided to find another store because we didn’t even trust the items that weren’t expired. There is a very nice Shop Rite 20 minutes away...
