Bertoni Gallery — Local services in Town of Warwick

Went to visit this store during the Warwick Apple Festival and was met with extremely poor service and an unexpected surcharge on my purchase. We browsed the store for a bit and found 2 pieces to purchase. Nothing massively expensive or large, the bill total was around $500, so it also wasn’t exactly a tiny amount. Once we had finished browsing, we requested to pay and were left standing around waiting. One of the salespersons asked us if we wanted to see anything and we replied there were two items behind the desk we had chosen and we just wanted to pay. We were met with a blank stare and I don’t think she actually heard us. Meanwhile the salesperson who had been assisting us was walking around the store asking if anyone needed help, as we stood there clearly within her view by the register waiting to pay. The other person went into the back and the woman who had helped us select our pieces proceeded to help someone else and even ring her her $95 purchase as we continued to stand there waiting to check out. Then finally she retrieved our pieces and proceeded to ring us up. When I saw the total, I asked if there was some additional tax outside of the normal Orange County 8.125% tax as the bill was higher than expected. I was then told there is a surcharge for credit card payments….after my card had already been swiped and approved! So basically this store charged me an additional 4% on top of the sales price without notifying me or asking if I preferred to pay cash to avoid the fee. I was also told that ‘this is normal and happens everywhere.’ Are you kidding me? Last time I checked, it is ILLEGAL to do this without CLEAR SIGNAGE posted at the point of payment. I did not see any clear signs and only saw this AFTER I PAID on my receipt. Frankly that is incredibly shady, poor business and just plain wrong. It’s not a massive amount of money, but it’s the principle of the matter. I left with a very bad taste in my mouth and will be sure to spread the word locally to friends and family as this is not ok and would recommend they keep walking to the competition down the street for equally nice pieces with fair business practices. Oh and to add further insult to injury, looking at their site to place orders, there is no ‘credit card surcharge’ listed. Absolutely horrendous. Oh and finally, I tried to verify the diamonds studs I purchased and the certificate number provided didn’t work on EGL or IGI website. Came up blank. What a great Experience at Bertoni Gallery! I had been in the store and fell in love with Herkimer diamond pieces in hand made glass tubes that one of Rachel’s artists makes.
