This hospital is my number one choice when I am in respiratory distress. The care I receive here from checking into the ER to discharge has been unmatchable. Because of my condition I have been admitted to hospitals locally as well as out of state so my comparison experience is broad.
I was received in a timely manner. My triage nurse was prompt, thorough and friendly. She made accommodations to support my comfort. My time in the ER was with the same nurse and she continued to display her skills as a hospital veteran. The attending ER doctor was able to convey his diagnosis with clarity, confidence and in a timely manner. The X-ray technician was able to take my images in room with efficiency because of my weak state. The register was brief, yet a pleasant experience.
My admittance to the hospital was a smooth transition by a kind tech who also gave me skilled care in the ER. At this point I was emotional because I finally felt safe in my distress. It felt as though I was home with family.
The care I received from Dr. Berke on the patient floor was exemplary. His personal compassion was comforting and reassuring as we discussed my treatment plan. The nurses who cared for me durning my stay were all positive attitudes, attentive, prompt, professional, and emotionally up-lifting. They provided ample fresh supplies to aide in recovery. The cleaning staff was quiet and left the space smelling fresh. The phlebotomy team was able to do their job with minimal pain helping to make my experience more pleasurable.
The biggest surprise that took me back was the food. The Chef is a former restaurant owner and the flavors that come through make that obvious. Also know that portion sizes are liberal.
My room was very comfortable, clean and fairly easy to move around in. You know the whole scene with an IV connection can pose challenges but staff is here to help. The bed unit was very easy to operate and offers a USB charging port and special pocket for your phone located on the left side. The jersey bed sheet and the heavy blanket would be my only complaint. On tender skin they are abrasive. I found a work around by covering the bed with a basic flat sheet and adding another over me with the blanket on top sandwiching me into a cozy cocoon that enables rest. Even the lighting at night was soothing and my room was quiet enabling my sleep.
My second doctor, Dr. Whitmore, has the demeanor of an old friend. Her care is gentle, easygoing and thoughtful. Just as her father Dr. Berke, their genuine concern for your well-being is evident.
To say that you are sad to be discharged from a hospital is out of the ordinary but this is an extraordinary establishment. Thank you Westfield Memorial Hospital and Allegheny Health Network, St. Vincent Hospital for helping me thrive on my...
Read moreI went to the ER for severe foot pain. When I got there the nurse that brought me back did a great job! She checked my feet for about 10 seconds and poked around to try to find out where the pain was sitting in my feet. After she was done with her small examination and questions, she grabbed the physician. This man literally walked into the room with his hands in his pockets and said you have plantar fasciitis you can either get a high strength, Tylenol, or a shot in the foot. I told him I wanted an x-ray, and when the x-ray showed that nothing was broken he stood by his claim. I told him that I don’t want any medication from him because he did not do any sort of examination on my feet. The only reason he did the x-ray is because I told him that I want one. That’s why I came here is because my feet feel like they are broken. Again, I had to remind him that he is not trustworthy, and I am going to go somewheres else to get a second opinion because he didn’t do an examination on me At all whatsoever he walked in the room with his hands in his pockets and told me that it’s just a strained ligament. I ended up going to Brooks And got great care! We did another x-ray, and it was shown that my navicular bone is extremely close to my ankle bone and most likely that because I walked 10 miles every 12 hour shift that I have the bones can’t touch by the end of the day, because of the way that I stand and walk . Which is why my feet gets so swollen and I feel like my feet are broken. I did not get any attentiveness from the physician at Westfield whatsoever! It was a complete waste of my time. Katie, in the emergency department at Brooks went through every step of the process with me before it even happened. She explained to me that I would see either an orthopedic or a podiatrist and they would most likely end up getting me some sort of custom arches to fix the arches in my foot, so I don’t feel the pain when I walk. Not a single shred of care and attended. This was given by the physician at Westfield at all! He needs...
Read moreThis might be a lengthy review, but it should be. Saturday morning, July 6th, I was on vacation in Sherman, N.Y. I was camping there. I woke up, and sparing the details, I could not urinate. I was in a lot of pain. I was there with my daughter and her family. She googled ER’s nearby and Westfield Memorial Hospital came up. We got in her car and we followed google to the hospital’s Emergency Room. It was a slow day there, at least for a few minutes. The receptionist could see that I was in tough shape. They got me into a room while she was still doing the paperwork. I was instantly met by Dena Ward, R.N. And within seconds by Nicolle Mutch, L.P.N. We all knew what had to happen, so we started the process of bladder scan, vitals and such. Dena and Nicolle were very kind and super professional, making everything that was happening to me to make me as comfortable and modest as possible. They got a gown on me, got me on a gurney, and began the process of the scan, vitals, and the inevitable catheter insertion.
Like I said, every attempt was made to keep me as comfortable and not embarrassed as possible . It all went quite smoothly. I then met Dr. Fred Havko, the epitome of small town doctors. He was extremely professional, calm and reassuring. He explained the results of the bladder scan and the cat scan. He went over my options for after care, telling that I have to see a urologist, etc. Everyone that I saw that day, including Becky Burris, and whomever else helped me that I have missed in this review, cudos to each and everyone of you. You should all be very proud of the work you do. I owe you all a big thank you. Oh, did I mention that I live in New Hampshire, which makes me a life long New England Patriots fan, with an over full bladder, in the heart of Buffalo Bills territory? Yeah, they could have rolled off to a corner somewhere and let me suffer :) . If I could leave a 10 star review, I would. From the bottom of this 70 year old man’s heart to all of you at Westfield Memorial ER, thank you, thank...
