I love the Restore! Cheap paint and supplies. Great project chairs. Great supplies for projects. Like spray paint at $3! You can’t beat that when quality name brands start at $6 at Walmart. Even had Magnolia brand white paint quarts for $5. Amazing.
Some things are way overpriced IMO, however. For instance, used sinks are ridiculously high priced when Marketplace and Craigslist offer these MUCH cheaper. Some light fixtures that are obviously dated in style are far too highly priced IMO. Used appliance prices are hit and miss - you really need to shop around to be sure you’re getting the best deal for what you are looking for. And…I’m not sure what their “deal” is with the brand of pots snd pans and kitchen items that they have tons of stock on…but it’s EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE for a ReStore stovk brand. A 5-8 pc cookware set ranging from $149-$299 was really off-putting to me. I expect their stock items to be affordable. Yes yes yes, I know that quality cookware comes at a price and that’s fine if I want to go out and buy a Calphalon cookware set for $400 (which I did), however, most people shopping at the Restore do so to try and save money or pinch every penny while updating their home & completing DIY projects. Most folks aren’t going to buy a 6 pc wooden utensil set for $99. That’s a splurge that doesn’t really make sense to me. I just wish if Habitat for Humanity was going to do a brand deal with a company to sell their cookware and kitchen gadgets that they would have done so with a much more affordable brand or a brand that had pricing/quality tiers to fit all budgets.
HOWEVER, with that being said…do NOT let this stop you from going to the ReStore because the GREAT things about the ReStore are REALLY REALLY GREAT. For starters, it’s a wonderful organization helping those most deserving acquire affordable housing of course - their mission!! …And they such GREAT DEALS that make up for the overpriced cookware. They have great tile and flooring deals along with great butcher block countertop prices. Scrap/used wood trim is greatly abundant and fairly priced as well. Even the brand new merch they sell is often far cheaper than you could purchase anywhere else - even at Walmart or Amazon. Love the second life bins they offer which are often overflowing with paint scrapers and old, worn, dirty and well used tools. They are priced to sell and at garage sale prices.
When I was last in the Urbandale location just last week, someone had donated 6 or 8 matching solid wood dining chairs with arms - all in their 70s flair and front-wheeled glory. The ReStore had them priced to move at only $5 each and were hard to walk away from even though they were super ugly ducklings in their current state. They would have been the perfect “Pinterest Project” chairs to turn into gorgeous swans for any traditional dining room by any visionary with the time, energy and know-how! I almost bought them but knew my husband would absolutely flip-out if I came home with yet another project to complete!
Long story short - it’s worth your time to stop in to the ReStore at either location or both! Just use a discerning eye and know not every single item is a steal...
Read moreI've been on the board of habitat for humanity, I've selected families to own such a home. I've read the Thelogy of the hammer, by the man who founded Habitat, Millard Fuller. Former president Jimmy Carter, who will soon turn 92 had been very much involved, as with his wife, over 4000 homes he has helped with. In fact in October him and his wife plan to help in Tennessee. If you don't understand the concept of this great organization, maybe you should try. These restores do have prices way high, when most of the supplies are donated, which means given to without cost or discount, or extra supplies from previous homes being built through Habitat. These habitat restores aren't following the mission and concept of this organization to allow such pricing on there items. Alot of items are fair pricing, but alot aren't, I shake my head every time I go into one and look around. How do we really know the money goes back into fordable housing . Soon the dollar tree stores, will be called five dollar tree stores! Goodwill stores, have jacked up there prices, and the money doesn't stay in Iowa. The purpose of dollar store, Goodwill, Aldi's, dollar tree, etc, is to help people on budgets, or ones less fortunate in there income. It's sad, that habitat restores are jacking up prices ,for the less fortunate people that do own homes and trying to maintain the best they can, the appliances are a joke on prices, and furniture. 200 dollars on an old floral couch??? Really, when it was donated, not modern at all, 50 dollars sounds better , especially to a family that needs a couch but can't afford modern one. I will continue to voice these concerns to higher up Habitat board members, who knows maybe I will meet up with Jimmy Carter soon, I know he wouldn't be happy with these store pricings. If you truly know the concept of Habitat for Humanity then grab a hammer and help nail down these prices, and try volunteering for a great...
Read moreGreat place to get supplies for a small remodel or basement finishing project. You have to stop in frequently to catch the really good stuff. Great place to go and save TONS of money on your house projects, if your patient and don't need specific things right away this place is perfect. Great place for rental property repairs!
This location is not quite as good as the Euclid location but it still has a nice selection. Prices tend to be a little higher here vs the Euclid location, in some cases priced higher than new and/or not consistent. Just be aware and know what your buying. All giving this location a 3 star review.
Edit: September 23rd 2020--. Definitely check pricing, more and more items are priced higher than new in a traditional retail store, keep in mind these items are used majority of the time. Seems to me they Google the item, find the highest priced/MSRP and mark down from there. These prices they find are not realistic to what's actually out there just down the street in Home Depot. More power to them if they can sell them for more than new, keep it up if it's working! Dropping down to two stars because of the pricing and...
