Galleria Market — Local services in Walnut

Nestled at the corner of Fullerton and Colima, this location is prime Rowland Heights real estate. It's a shame that the market puts so little effort in appearances; it looks run-down and unloved, a patchwork of half-measures.

Parking is a nightmare at any time of day. Expect to park in the rear of the building. The shopping carts rattle and wobble, at the cusp of breaking down. The smell of the location is a mixture of spices and rotting food, as if blueberries and grapes roll underneath the display cases regularly.

The seafood and butcher shop remind me of 1980's Soviet style markets, with a sickly colored painted walls, scratched acrylic fishtanks, and bright pink meats under white fluorescent lights. It feels medical, yet unsanitary.

Unpacked boxes will line the aisles and shelves, their contents asking to be freed and sold. I see attendants stocking shelves, but progress must be slow because there is an endless mountain of boxed goods.

So with all these negative remarks, how can I give it 2 stars? Why not just 1 star and be done with it?

Galleria is unique in its catalog of food stuffs; only here will you find the most obscure culinary ingredients. The fresh produce is also very affordable and fresh. I cannot say the same about the seafood or meats (I have never dared to buy any), but the vegetables are incredible.

Overall, I would never visit this place if I had another choice. But in the rare instance when I'm missing that single unique ingredient, I'm willing to bear the burden of visiting Galleria to buy...

Many restaurants get supplies from this supermarket. This is actually a Korean supermarket but almost all people here speak Chinese. But, when you look at the printed label in the seafood,meat or produce section it is written in English and Korean. The meat section, is almost always cheaper and fresher than other Asian supermarkets such as 99ranch, GW, and 168 market. Parking is pretty easy even on the weekends. Shopping carts are always limited, you need to grab a shopping cart from the parking lot. I often see foods that need to be refrigerated out in room temperature. Unsurprisingly, I saw moldy Korean rice cakes in the refrigerator aisles, meaning they left them outside, let the rice cakes get moldy, and are selling them again.

Most people know that chicken wings are typically more expensive than chicken legs. And it appears the owner of this supermarket decided to take advantage of it. My family purchased a pack of “chicken wings”, and we shortly discovered that they were actually just legs cut in half. In fact, we were able to piece together 2 halves of a leg bone within the package that we bought.
