this shelter could easily be mistaken for one of mother Theresas houses for the dying. 20% of staff have hearts of gold but are beyond jaded. the other 80% have no idea what theyre doing because of high turnover. this shelter essentially exists so nobody is sleeping on the sidewalks and apart from showers and dinner will do almost nothing to help you achieve not being homeless. because the attitude here is that the dregs are in this shelter and arent going anywhere. i think thats a shame. one, because 80% of the women here are decent women. and two, because i think the legacy of harriet tubman deserves better than this.
if you're considering going here, heres some advice - i stayed here for about six months. you cant have razors, food, or pretty much anything that staff arbitrarily decides might injure anyone. nail polish is also included in this. so is your pillow. remember, the attitude here is that the residents are a bunch of animals. take away their weapons and laissez-faire you're on your own is the approach here. security is competent but a lack of training, experience, and sheer muscle leave them less effective than they could or should be.
i would love to give more than two stars but if im honest, i doubt anyone there would give it a higher rating - residents or staff. and thats a huge issue. im not a genius or a long-lived womens shelter fixer upper... but this place needs love. a...

Read moreUnfair and mistreatment as well as medical malpractice practices at the Harriet Tubman Women’s Shelter by three women. One is medium complexion with blonde dreadlocks and eyelash extensions, squinty eyes, another is super petite, short, with long braids in her hair, and another was the social worker in the case management office who is approximately 250 pounds, dark skinned. She gave me permission through the case management office to stay outside extended period of time for the purpose of institutional learning however upon returning to the dormitory location my occupancy was given to a new resident where my belongings are still currently located. Therefore I’ve been forced outdoors and have still been suffering substantial cold symptoms , as well as chills, shivering, and loss of hearing and touch. They’re staffed with Catholic Charities. They also denied me services which started to begin shortly after reporting a medical symptom to them which i believe was a reason to them to treat me as...
