Last week, I had the pleasure of visiting the Japanese Pagoda in Washington, DC, next to the Tidal Basin and the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial. This 17th-century stone statue, gifted by the mayor of Yokohama in 1957, stands as a symbol of over 100 years of friendship between the United States and Japan. Its simplicity and rich history left me deeply impressed.

Standing by the pagoda, made of nine granite slabs representing elements like sky, wind, fire, water, and earth, I was struck by its artistry and symbolism. The intricate carvings of Buddha on the base added a layer of serenity and contemplation. Knowing that this 3,800-pound structure arrived in five crates with no instructions and was pieced together with help from Library of Congress researchers deepened my appreciation.

This pagoda is very aesthetically pleasing, and the accompanying information about the symbolism behind pagodas and the history behind this gift from Japan is also interesting. That said, there isn't that much space to observe the pagodas without being blocked by the trees, and there isn't a great view from the benches so the area around the pagodas isn't really built for reflection or extended appreciation. Given that, I'd recommend seeing this given that there are a lot of other attractions nearby, but it's not worth making the trek from downtown just to...

I like it, it's a detailed monument. Features sculptures of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, his wife Eleanor Roosevelt, and his dog, in addition to segments highlighting the Great Depression and the CCC, as well as various quotes.
