Wirth Collecting is everything thatâs wrong with the hobby. They are 100% profit-driven and have zero interest in doing their part to prevent another chaotic collapse like what happened in the 90s.
I live nearby, so we keep thinking weâll give them another try, but today was the last straw. My wife took in a stack of 160 low-end PokĂ©mon cards that averaged around $1 in value each. We agreed before she went that $80-100 would be more than fair, assuming that at the worst case theyâd take all $160 and put in their $1 box and move 40-50% profit. Their PokĂ©mon dollar bin is normally rather barren, and our 160 cards would have been a much-needed breath of fresh air for that stagnant box of repeats. I have zero doubt they would have moved 75% in a weekend.
All that being said, she was offered $21 cash, $30 trade-in, for 101 of the cards. They wouldnât even make an offer on the other 59.
Iâm honestly flabbergasted by their business model. How is paying less than 80% market value supposed to make anyone walk out of there feeling like they didnât get slapped in the face by a Charizard tail?
Our family has spent multiple hundreds of dollars in this store over the last two years, and now all 3 times weâve tried to sell anything, weâve been insulted by their greed. Itâs always someone elseâs fault when they offer too, âmy boss saysâ, etc.
Great place to look at overpriced stacks of sealed product, pickup an occasional pack (thatâs probably been ripped and resealed, per multiple collectors around town Iâve spoken with). Donât take their offers without doing your due diligence; otherwise, youâll come back next time and see the card they gave you $10 in the case for $75.
If their profit margins are so tight they have to operate business this way, they probably should have thought twice about expanding their store and instead put a realistic price on some stuff and focused on moving boxes instead of stacking them to the ceiling.
I was a huge collector as a kid, but my interest soured after being burned by my local card shop as a kid. 25 some odd years later, I tried picking the hobby back up with my wife and kids along by my side, and my new local card shop is right there to kick me in the teeth just like when I was a kid.
Thanks Wirth Collecting for being everything thatâs wrong with the hobby. My family wonât be back, and Iâll spread the word to every collector or potential collector...
Read moreWent in to see about selling a few pokemon cards that I've had since about 1999. I had already looked up market value on these cards at TCGPlayer. So I was pretty shocked when I was told that because of the condition they could only do $20 for all of them. Never even bothered to take the Venusaur Holofoil Base Set out of the 2 protective sleeves to check the condition. That card alone is worth $80. It's in Near Mint condition, but even that card rated as Damaged is worth $10 - $15 by itself. I had several other valuable cards as well. Tried to make me feel like the cards I brought in weren't worth much, probably in the hopes of practically stealing the cards from me and making a profit of over 10x what they paid. Scumbag tricks!!! Check the value of your cards before you let them scam you...

Furthermore, it's important to be wary of a company that displays unscrupulous business practices and appears to value profits more than being honest and truly satisfying its customers. The overall experience suggests a need for improvement in both service and professionalism to truly meet customer...
